"I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" is a song by Britney Spears released from the album Britney. It was released as the third single in countries such as Australia and the UK during the fourth quarter of 2001 and the second single in the U.S.

The song was written by Max Martin, Rami, and English songwriter Dido, and was also produced by the former two.

[edit] Background

The song was originally intended to be in the Crossroads soundtrack, before Spears decided to include it on her third studio album. She has said that the song it's "inspirational [..] and probably one of my favorite songs that I've ever sang."[2] Britney was inspired by the fan mail she received every day from teenage girls who are in that awkward in-between stage of adolescence and wanted to sing a song that spoke of the angst and heartache of puberty. [3]

[edit] Music video

The music video for "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" was filmed at Antelope Canyon, Arizona and was directed by Wayne Isham. Isham's concept was to have Spears on a natural environment. Isham stated the video was filmed completely on location and none of the scenes were shot on green screens. He also remarked Spears attitude on set, saying,

"She went out there and, without a safety cable, just stood there with those cowboy boots on. She was standing on the edge in her cowboy boots, looking hot. We'd be right on the edge, and she had not a blink of fear. I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience with her [..] She stepped into it with positive energy. She ended up stepping out and kicking ass."[2]

The video won an award in Japan for "Best International Music Video". There are two versions of the video for this track. One is the album version which features Spears mostly atop a cliff and inside Antelope Canyon. The other is the movie version, which, because the single was meant to help promote Britney's film Crossroads, includes some scenes from the album version and also several scenes from the movie. Other scenes include Spears in a gown singing in a re-creation of one of the hotel rooms in Crossroads, one where she is sitting near a campfire, and another where she is driving the car featured in the film.

[edit] Chart performance

Though "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" was meant to help promote Crossroads (& also Not A Girl), the single did not make much impact in the United States, and failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. At Top 40 radio, the single peaked at the bottom end of the Top 40 Tracks and Mainstream Top 40.[4]

However, the song was a modest success internationally; in some countries, such as the U.K., Ireland and Australia it was big hit, peaking at #2, #3 and #7, respectively. However, in other regions like France and Brazil, it failed to break into the Top 10. In Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally, "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" peaked at #2 in its seventh week, being kept off the top position by Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever."[5] Overall, the song was a bigger hit than Overprotected internationally.
