Countries with Icelandic diplomatic missions
This is a list of diplomatic missions of Iceland. Though Iceland has a small network of diplomatic missions, it has a Consulate-General in Winnipeg that served the significant population of Manitobans with Icelandic heritage. It was also the first state, in 2007, to open a Consulate-General in Tórshavn in the autonomous Faroe Islands, due to the close relations Iceland enjoys with the islands; historically, economically and culturally.[citation needed]
In 2001, Iceland opened its first embassy in Africa in Maputo, Mozambique, but later moved its ambassador to Pretoria, where it opened a new embassy that is now accredited to Mozambique. The embassy in Maputo has since then been headed by a chargé d’affaires.[citation needed]
Iceland has two separate diplomatic missions in both Brussels and New York City. In Brussels, the embassy also functions as a mission to the European Union, but a separate delegation, accredited to NATO, is housed elsewhere in the city. In New York City, Iceland has a permanent mission to the UN and, separately, a consulate-general where the trade representative to the US and Canada also has offices.[citation needed]
The embassies in Italy, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka and Uganda are all headed by chargés d’affaires.[citation needed]
As a result of the financial crisis, Iceland has announced it would close its embassies in South Africa, Italy, Nicaragua and Sri Lanka in 2009 in the wake of budget cuts.[1][2]
