Files for deletion

Files for deletion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created — see burden of proof." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review.

Examples of what you may request here

Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version.
Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in any Wikimedia project.
Low quality - The file is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright.
NFCC violation - The file is used under a claim of fair use but does not meet the requirements.

I. For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use one of the speedy deletion templates. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use.

II. Files that have no source, or have an unknown copyright, or are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page:

{{subst:nsd}} if a file has no source indicated
{{subst:nld}} if a file has a source but no licensing information
{{subst:orfud}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but isn't used in any articles
{{subst:rfu}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but could be replaced by a free file
{{subst:dfu|reason}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but the rationale isn't sufficient or is disputed
{{subst:frn}} if a file has no non-free use rationale

If the source or licensing information of an image marked as being freely licensed is disputed, please list the file on Possibly unfree files

III. Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use

{{isd|Full name of file excluding the "File:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other file is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
{{now commons|File:NEW FILENAME}} if the file now exists on Commons, or {{now commons}} for files with the same name on Commons. (Don't nominate protected images, they are usually locally uploaded and protected since they are used in an interface message or in a highly used template, thus they are high-risk.)

IV. For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{db-f9}}

V. Suspected copyright violations shouldn't be listed here.

If a file is listed as public domain or under a free license, but lacks verification of this (either by an OTRS ticket number or a notice on the source website), tag it as {{subst:npd}}.
For other suspected copyright infringements or licensing issues, use Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files.

VI. Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead.

VII. If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criterion 8 for files.

VIII. If you are the uploader of the image, tag it with {{db-author}}.

Instructions for listing files for deletion

To list a file:

1	Edit the file page. Add `{{ffd\|log=2012 March 3}}` to the file page.
2	Create its FfD subsection. Follow this edit link and list the file using `{{subst:ffd2\|File_name.ext\|Uploader= \|Reason= }} ~~~~` Leave the subject heading blank. If the file has been replaced by another file, name the file that replaced it in your reason for deletion. Refer below for a list of other common reasons. For listing additional files with the same reason, edit the first file section and use `{{subst:ffd2a\|File_name.ext\|Uploader= }}`
3	Give due notice. Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using `{{subst:fdw\|File_name.ext}}` Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the image or media For multiple images by the same user, use `{{subst:fdw-multi\|First_file.ext\|Second_file.ext\|Third_file.ext}} ~~~~` (can handle up to 26) If the image is in use, also consider adding `{{ifdc\|File_name.ext\|log=2012 March 3}}` to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages.

State the reasons why the file should be deleted. Some common reasons are:

Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new file name (often abbreviated OB)
Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the file is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead). Please consider moving "good" free licensed files to Commons rather than outright deleting them, other projects may find a use for them even if we have none; you can also apply {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} . (often abbreviated OR, not to be confused with original research which generally doesn't apply to images)
Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia (or for any Wikimedia project). Images used on userpages should generally not be nominated on this basis alone unless the user is violating the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not policy by using Wikipedia to host excessive amounts unencyclopedic material (most commonly private photos). (often abbreviated UE)
Low quality - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns. (often abbreviated LQ)
Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright. (often abbreviated CV)

These are not the only "valid" reasons to delete a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones.

Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image.

If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used.

I want to inform you that the map in itself is non-free but the site allows to download the original map. When I downloaded the map it had a water-mark saying - www.mapsofindia.com which means that the original map is modified to include the source site. So I can use it anywhere I want as the source is already embedded in the picture. there is no mention in the website about its usage policies etc. So, please tell me if it is still marked for deletion? To your advice for creating the map - it is not easy to create a map in such a small time I have. I am here to expand wikipedia in my limited time but I make sure that all the contributions I make are reliable and would not lead to any discrepancies. I'm afraid Stefan2 is correct here. According to our policies on non-free content, we insist that images must be under a completely free license, or that they must be replaced with self-made items. This is required as part of what critics said in the Recpetion area. They described their relationship, so the reader understands the relationship between them, if they were close, etc. It should not be deleted, as this was the main plot throughout the episdoe, aswell as being part of critical commentary. I think the photo is needed, because it is the only time in the development of the game that Agent had been officialy shown to the public. And it wasnt shown by screenshots etc., but by a simple logo. But that is the only time the game has been officialy shown to public, and has since been secretly in development. The game hasnt been shown to public, since E3 2009. And it wasnt a announcment with screenshots, much info, trailer etc. (like other games at E3), but simply by a logo. - The issue is that it has been overwritten. The first revision is a 1x1 image.   - The original was uploaded 2 minutes prior to being overwritten, and was not a JPG, it was a GIF, so whatever the case, it's all wrong. Tagged as "orphaned fair use" by User:Skier Dude earlier today but the uploader quickly removed the tag. Apart from being orphaned, it also seems to be replaceable fair use. It appears to be the coat of arms of a US Army organisation, so there is no need to use a copy which violates Commons:COM:COA#Coat of arms "found on the internet". Uploader claims fair use because of inability to locate a copy of this boot, yet he quotes a forum post where someone bought a pair of them in a shop in Whistler. Fair use is generally not allowed for photos of real people since you can visit the people and produce free replacements, and for the same reason, I don't see why a fair use photo of a boot still in existence would be allowed since you can visit a boot owner and produce a free replacement. Yes, yet he quotes a forum post where someone bought a pair of them in a shop in Whistler, and as far as I am aware, this is the only known example. I have checked with a number of collectors and ski museums over the period since the article was created, and this is the only one I have ever found. Furthermore, the article clearly does reference this specific model (look for it).

In any event, Stefan's argument is based purely on theory, and I don't believe deleting this historically important image because maybe we could replace it serves any purpose. Maury Markowitz (talk)

OK, so it is mentioned briefly in a short sentence. However, its significance isn't mentioned, failing WP:NFCC#8. The significance of the boot is mentioned, it talks to one of the primary problems with the binding design, in that the binding plates were prone to pull out of the bottom of the boot. Keep OR images are perfectly acceptable on Wikipedia. Any previously unpublished photo by a user is such. It is articles that must not contain "original research". I do not think this image is on Commons and it could be usefully moved there. Artists' impressions can be extremely encyclopedic when based on reliable information. - Comment These images of exoplanets feature colors, most exoplanets have no research done that indicates the color of the planet, so that is highly unreliable information being featured as "data" in our articles. Most you get is albedo, so any artistic impressions of exoplanets that is created by users for Wikipedia's or non-RS use, cannot feature colors. This particular images features wispy white clouds, there is no way that you can extrapolate that from the research data. If you look at real images of Saturn and Jupiter, they are banded planets, while Uranus and Neptune are not; this planet is 7x the mass of Jupiter, so why is the artistic impression that of billiard ball Neptune/Uranus instead of banded Jupiter/Saturn? I tagged this as "replaceable fair use" but a user disputed this, claiming that "This photo is not replaceable as it does not only identify the subject, but also depicts a particular time in his 2011 political campaign for the presidency of Nigeria, that is, also covered by this article. Moreover, the photo is explicitly distributed for publicity purposes, intended for reuse by the media; therefore, there is implicit license for its use in discussing the subject that is being promoted. This suggests that the image might not only fail WP:NFC#UUI #1 but also #7. Besides, I don't see any need to show a picture of him during the presidential campaign. I tagged this as replaceable fair use. A user disputed this, claiming that "the image was taken within one of Australia’s most restricted defence facilities. No other public images of the Joint Operations Command Center exist." The article doesn't specifically seem to discuss the interior of the building (WP:NFCC#8) so I think that it would be replaceable by a photo of the exterior of the building which might be easier to obtain. Since it is a defence building, I am also wondering if there might be some kind of cooperation with the US military. In that case, there might be some {{PD-USGov}} images. As the uploader of the image I will not !vote but I will comment.

The Joint Control Center is main reason for the existance of HQJOC.
The Department of Defence released this photo to the media because no other public photos of the Joint Control Center exist. The image has been staged such that none of the personnel can be identified.
There are no {{PD-USGov}} images of HQJOC in the Defence.gov or service multimedia archives.
Under Australian law (section 82 of the Defence Act 1903) it is a criminal offence to make a sketch, drawing, photograph, picture or painting of any defence installation in Australia or even approach any defence installation in possession of any sketching, drawing, photographic or painting materials or apparatus.
Given the above, the chance that "a free image might reasonably be found or created" is close to zero.

Keep Pretty much for the reasons given by ShipFan above. I regularly check for new PD-US photos of the Australian military, and none have ever been taken of this facility (which is hardly surprising given that it's a command centre and most US government photos of the Australian military depict joint military exercises). The site of this command centre is isolated and highly secure, and there's no way that a free alternative that shows what conditions are like inside the centre could exist this is what the place looks like from as close as the public can get. Keep As mentioned above, the building is there because of what happens inside it - i.e. what happens inside is what's improtant, not the building itself. As mentioned/implied above, no photographic equipment is allowed inside the building in normal circumstances; the above image has been created under specially arranged and authorised circumstances. Given the above arguments, it sounds that it isn't easily replaceable, as the photographer would risk having to go to jail for espionage. I have tried, but cannot figure out how to add the license that is assigned to the Picasso sculpture photo, which reads:

Statues in the United States are a bit complex: you can only take a photo of them if the copyright has expired. To determine if the copyright has expired or not, do the following checks:

Was the statue installed before 1923?
Was the statue installed before 1978 but without a copyright notice ("Copyright 1963 Some Sculptor")?
Was the statue installed before 1964 but without a renewal of the copyright 28 years after the installation?

If the answer to any of the questions is "yes", then the statue is in the public domain, so taking a photo of it is fine. SIRIS mentions no copyright notice for this statue, so I would guess that it is fine. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:42, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

This image was previously nominated for deletion here. Reasons given for deletion then were that it was unencyclopedic and low quality. Reasons against were that it illustrated the article. The discussion was closed without reference to any of the above, using the justifications that it was "used for a long time" and "free", neither of which are valid reasons. While I also enjoy the song which the article is about and agree that it is well-known, those are reasons that justify the article, not a poor quality image of people driving and looking at something mentioned in the song. If that were the case, we could fill every song article on WP with pictures of girlfriends, cars, money... virtually anything, justifying it as "illustrating [a] strong association", which was the uploader's rationale. It really doesn't even do that well, as it is a poorly-composed shot of some blurry signs from inside a car. As it does not fall under image criteria, this one needs to go. Strong Keep. Most song articles lack illustrative images (typically just a sleeve cover, if anything). This song happens to have a strong geographical association to the Mass Pike and the two endpoints named in the lyric (go to a James Taylor concert anywhere in the Northeast U.S. and you'll see what I mean, the applause for the line always comes). And here is a photo that shows both endpoints as well as a James Taylor cassette cover that contains the song. This will convey to the reader the geographical association more strongly than any text by itself can. There are only a few other articles that do this – Penny Lane is an example – so this is hardly the slippery slope to pictures of girlfriends illustrating every song. Can't say I agree with your reasoning. Many, many songs have geographical associations -- as long as we're on James Brown, he sings plenty himself. But that doesn't mean we'd put a picture from North Carolina up on Carolina in my Mind, Los Angeles on Honey Don't Leave L.A., Mexico on Mexico... you get my point. So standing by itself, that's a tenuous argument.

That also doesn't address the poor quality issue. It looks like something you might see in a friend's photo album from a road trip, which is all well and good, but it's not encyclopedic. I don't even agree that the roadsigns are clear. They're blurry. Throwing in a cassette is irrelevant. It's not even noticeable unless you're looking for it; I didn't realize it was there until you mentioned it (and I zoomed in), and it's completely illegible. If it was a better composed shot of just the intersection and signs (something like File:A20 Ouest km143.jpg, for example), well, maybe there'd be something to consider. But as it is, it's sideways, it's blurry, it's cluttered, and the subject only makes up maybe 10% of the entire image. It couldn't even be cropped into usability. Wikipedia is the home of many less-than-ideal quality photographs. That comes with the territory due to its very restrictive image use rights. Take a look at the Jackson Browne article, for example. The images are all grainy, soft focus, or uncharacteristic of the subject. For a long time the top photo on the James Taylor article was this one, which has a mysterious hand in it. That one is still in the article, just later on. Look at the images in the Carole King article – none of these are pro quality either. The only photo of Roy Bittan has a flash reflection and a totally distracting background in it. And on and on. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:49, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Keep Just looking at the image, it does not look encyclopedic to me. But the fact that it is in use at Sweet Baby James (song) clearly means it is encyclopedic for the editors there. Since the image is free it is not up to FFD to disturb that. If anyone thinks that the image is a detriment to the article, the right approach is to go to Talk:Sweet Baby James (song) and get consensus for removing the image from the article (or be bold, remove it and wait for while to see if anyone objects). Once orphaned, there is a stronger case for deletion although not one I would personally agree with. IMPORTANT NOTE - the subject of this image is a combination of two things: the photographic backdrop utilising the Skinhead Girls photo by Derek Ridgers in relation to its use by the singer Morrissey at this particular concert; the subject is NOT just Morrissey and NOT just the backdrop, it is a combination of both - and there is no other free image available of this subject combination, which is why permission was sought and granted by the original author of the image Affable Familiar (talk) 12:37, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
