Immunet Protect Free is a free, cloud-based, community-driven antivirus application, using the ClamAV engine. The software is complementary with existing antivirus software. As of 5 January 2011, Immunet has been acquired by Sourcefire.[1][2]
The application is very small, compared to other AV software, (10Mb on the disk) fast, free, and offers up-to-date protection against thousands of new threats daily (with at least 1,932,510 members, protected from 28,865,081 threats, as of October 2011).[3] Virus signature files are stored in the cloud, not on individual computers, so no update downloads are required. Once a virus is detected and blocked for one user, all Immunet user's will receive the same protection, almost instantly.

[edit] Products
Immunet as provided by Sourcefire comes in 2 versions:- 1. Immunet Free (Free for commercial and personal use)[4] 2. Immunet Plus (Commercial, paid version)
Immunet free currently in version 2.0 offers basic protection to its users based on the virus definitions in the cloud as well as an option to include the ClamAV off-line virus definitions for to use when not connected to internet. The online protections gives rapid updates to the users and doesn't require a large memory foot-print to work on. The free version doesn't have some of the features that are given in the Plus version like Advanced Offline Protection, Advanced detection and removal, Advanced File Management Protection, Mail Database Scanning. Immunet Free is advised to be used alongside another AV product from the list.[5]
Immunet Plus on the other hand gives advanced protection to its users by using a couple of more scan engines than the Free version and gives its users better protection. Immunet Plus uses the BitDefender scan engine for advanced features.
[edit] Effectiveness
While independent testing has been done some times from PCMag[6] which rates the product to be fair in its effectiveness. The memory and system usage of the product is pretty small as its virus definitions lie on the cloud rather than in the user's computer. The cloud protection has been known to give better protection and detection, on the other hand the offline protection is not that good. Overall the effectiveness of the Free product is average so the company itself recommends the users to use the Free product an additional protection rather than using it alone.
