In the Shadow of the Sun is an improvised "score" created by Throbbing Gristle for the Derek Jarman 1980 super-8 film bearing the same title.[1] It is an example of what Throbbing Gristle founder Genesis P-Orridge called "Ambient video", used to "enhance or complete an environment."[2] Throbbing Gristle played a new version of the soundtrack live during their April 2009 United States tour.[3]

According to Simon Ford, both the movie and its accompanying soundtrack "revelled in distortion, chance, and formlessness."[1]
In the Shadow of the Sun has drawn comparisons with the ambient music works of Brian Eno, Pink Floyd circa Ummagumma (1969) and krautrock stahlwarts Ash Ra Tempel.[4]

In the Shadow of the Sun premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February 1981,[5] where it was received enthusiastically by the audience.[6]
