[edit] Becoming a member
To become a Certified Dog Trainer (CDT), a person must submit documentation for an exam. There is no practical test of the trainer's ability. Documentation includes: Exam registration form, three letters of reference, sample training handout and interview forms, three case studies, and three client forms. Becoming an advanced CDT requires being first registered as a CDT for 1 year, have 5 years experience and pass a practical exam. The practical exam can be taken in person or submitted by video.
The requirement for the grades of membership is based on examinations carried out by IACP.[1] IACP sets and controls its own certification and provides means by which members can develop their skills through seminars, conferences and journals.
Members of the IACP abide by a code of conduct which is controlled by the governing body of the IACP.[2]
However, none of IACP's examinations or governing processes are externally audited or accredited.
[edit] Positions
The IACP has published several position statements on issues that affect dogs and their welfare, including debarking, breed-specific legislation, service dogs, training tools and mandatory sterilization.[3]
The IACP is opposed to breed-specific legislation.[4]
