International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (अंतरराष्ट्रीय सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान हैदराबाद, IIIT, Hyderabad, IIITH) is an autonomous university in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. It was established in 1998 with seed support from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It was envisioned by Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of the State of Andhra Pradesh from 1995–2004, to put Hyderabad on the World IT map, through the creation of a prominent IT research university. It emphasizes research from the undergraduate level, which makes it different from the other leading engineering institutes in India like the IITs. Raj Reddy, the only Indian to win the Turing Award, is the chairman of the board of governors.
The major goal is to impart a uniquely broad and interdisciplinary IT education of high academic quality. This is done through a diverse curriculum of IT courses, interdisciplinary IT research projects, interaction with industry, preparation in entrepreneurship and personality development courses.

IIIT Hyderabad was set up in 1998 as a not-for-profit public private partnership (NPPP) and is the first IIIT to be set up (under this model) in India. The Government of Andhra Pradesh lent support to the institute by grant of land and buildings. A Governing Council consisting of eminent people from academia, industry and government presides over the governance of the institution. Dr. Rajeev Sangal, former Head of Department of Computer Science, IIT Kanpur, has played an instrumental part in setting up of the institute. He is current director of the institute.
IIIT-H is organized as research centres and labs, instead of the conventional departments, to facilitate inter-disciplinary research and a seamless flow of knowledge within the Institute. It is the only such institute of higher learning to follow such a model in India. Faculty assigned to the centers and labs conduct research, as well as academic programs, which are owned by the Institute, and not by individual research centers.

The institute is in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, which is about 10km from the old city and the central railway station. It is close to HITEC City (a centre housing software development centres of companies like Microsoft, Oracle Corporation, Motorola, Infosys and GE Capital) and the presence of IT majors from across the globe right on the campus through their schools and research centers. The new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, in Shamshabad is close by from the campus.
[edit] Academics
IIIT Hyderabad offers both undergraduate, postgraduate and dual degree programmess. Undergraduate programmes award either Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) or B.Tech Honors in various areas of Information Technology, while postgraduate programmes award either Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Master of Philosophy (M.Phil). Dual degree programmes award B.Tech/M.Sc. Positions for Ph.D degrees are also available and the institute also offers post graduate diploma studies in specific areas.
[edit] Admissions
Admissions for undergraduate and dual degrees were taken solely through AIEEE i.e. CCB (Central Counseling board) counseling until the year 2009. From the academic batch 2010 (known as UG2k10) the institute revised the admission procedure and decided on independent selection students though still considering the merit achievements of AIEEE. The institute also selects students based on interviews and Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY).
Admissions for postgraduate studies are on the basis of Post-graduate Entrance Exam (PGEE) conducted by IIIT-H.
Admissions to the MSIT programme run at this institute are based on a test conducted every year from April to May.
Consortium of Institutions of Higher Learning (CIHL)
IIIT Hyderabad is part of CIHL along with JNTU Hyderabad, Osmania University, Andhra University and Sri Venkateswara University offer the Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) program in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg (CMU) from 2001 on wards. MSIT program is offered at all the member universities of CIHL along with IIIT Hyderabad.CMU provides a companion certificate to all those who successfully complete the program. CIHL office is located inside the IIIT Hyderabad campus.
Dr.Raj Reddy is the Chairman of CIHL and also a Governing Council member of IIIT Hyderabad. Dr. M Venkateswarlu, Sri MG Gopal (IAS), Sri Sanjay Jaju (IAS), Dr. K Lakshmi Narayana (IAS), Dr. P Prakash, Prof. Rameshwar Rao, Prof. Rajeev Sangal, Prof. M Satyanarayana and Prof. M Sreenivasa Rao form the governing council of CIHL.

IIIT Hyderabad was ranked #14 by the India Today Best Engineering colleges 2011,[1] #16 by Outlook India Top Engineering Colleges of 2011[2] and #5 by Dataquest India's Top Engineering Colleges 2011.[3] In rankings limited to private institutes it was ranked second by Mint Top 50 Private Engineering Colleges of 2009.[4]

[edit] Campus
The Institute is situated on a campus of 62 acres (250,000 m²). There are 4 buildings that house the corporate schools and research centers. In addition to this, the academic building has the lecture halls, tutorial rooms, computer and electronics labs and offices of the administration and faculty. The buildings are named after the mountain ranges, Nilgiri, Vindhya and Himalaya (still underconstruction).
All students are provided hostel rooms. Few students have to share rooms (double occupancy) whereas most of the students have single occupancy. The Institute has a Guest House with four air conditioned suites. Two hostels for men and one for women have a total of about 1200 rooms. There is an optical fiber network connecting all buildings on campus including the hostels.
The Institute has well-equipped air-conditioned computer laboratories allocated batch-wise to students. The labs are equipped with modern hardware and software. The PC to students ratio is about 1:2. All computers are part of an intranet (1 Gbit/s Backbone). The Institute has high bandwidth (60 Mbit/s) Internet connectivity round the clock. Research students have 24 hours access to the computer facilities. The students administer their own computer systems. The research centers and corporate schools provide specialized equipment for research and development.
It is one of the most computer adataptive institutions in India. All the notices and information are sent over the campus email. From couriers to mess registration everthing is notified via specific portals(internal sites).
Selected areas of the institute like Few parts of Boys' Hostel, Nilgiri and Library Building are connected by WiFi. IIIT maintains its own proxy server.

- Robocamp is a national level robotics workshop conducted by IIIT-H Robotics Club (IRC) every year in summers since 2008. In 2011 one of the most successful workshops was organised by the second year students of IRC.[5][6] 2010, 2009 and 2008
- Tech Ease a national workshop for students and professionals on innovation, design and user experience has been organised in 2009,2010 and 2011.
- R & D Showcase - The research and project exhibition showcasing the research work and projects carried out in the institute.[7][8]
- ExOR Excitement of Research, is meant to excite deep interest in research, and encourage students to take up research both in academics and in career.

With total students of about 1400, IIIT-H witnesses an active student life. Importance is given to all kinds of activities like cultural and sports. There are cultural and athletic activities throughout the year in which good participation is seen. Apart from these there are various clubs which are active like Movie Discussion Club, Dramatics Club, Photography Club and Music Club.
The students are divided into four Houses upon their intake in the college. The houses are: Agni, Aakash, Prithvi and Vayu. All the cultural and sport competitions are based around the house system where the houses battle it out for the top position.

Each year IIIT holds its annual cultural and technical festival Felicity [1], in the month of February. Since its inception, Felicity has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most eagerly awaited college festivals in Hyderabad. Felicity attracts students from all major engineering and degree colleges across the country.
Renowned music bands like Strings[2], Parikrama[3], Motherjane [4], Indian Ocean, Ganesh & Kumaresh, Euphoria, Demonic Resurrection, Bombay Vikings, Sledge have performed at Felicity over the past few years.
Solo performances by Mohit Chauhan of Masakali Fame and Kumar Vishwas, a popular comic poet (hasya-kavi), were huge hits in the recent years.
Dr I V Subba Rao, Chief Electoral Officer of Andhra Pradesh gave the inaugural address at Felicity 2010, while noted Telugu film director Sekhar Kammula, delivered the commencement address.
Jayaprakash Narayan, founder of the Lok Satta Party, gave an inaugural address at Felicity 2009.

There are various sports activities which are performed everyday. Sports also is alloted a compulsory credit and students must compulsorily take part in Physical Training for one semester to achieve this credit.
The students are encouraged to engage in various co-curricular and extra curricular activities for their all round development. IIIT has a basic gymnasium and provides ample facilities for major sports such as Cricket, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Throwball, Table-tennis, Badminton and Athletics. Inter-house sporting competitions are held every year where the four houses, namely Aakash, Agni, Prithvi and Vayu vie for the honors. Other than the house based competitions, inter-batch competitions have also been organised to improve the interaction among the various years.
[edit] Students Parliament
The student representatives of each batch constitute the student parliament of IIIT, the student parliament is given powers by the administration to form laws regarding student life in IIIT. The constitution of the college has been drafted by the students parliament. It acts as a governing body for the students. Student issues are addressed to the administration through the parliament. It acts as an intermediary between students and the administration.
The students parliament was dissolved in 2009 owing to inactivity. It has been resurrected in 2011, in a new form with representatives being elected from each batch.

Students run a monthly newletter called Ping. It helps to give voice to the students and bring up issuses in the campus, discuss ongoing topics etc.
