Erattupetta is a town in Kottayam district in the state of Kerala, India.It is 38 km east of Kottayam, the District Centre. Erattupetta was known as Erappili and Erappuzha before the Advent of Tamil Muslims into this town. Erattupetta is situated in the foothills of High Ranges. It was the commercial capital of the Poonjar principality until 1949. The hill produce from the Nilgiris were brought down by the Muthuvans for trade. Wagamon, a Hill Station lies some 22 km east of Eruttupetta. Erattupetta's current economy is primarily rubber and scores of large and small estates dot the landscape. Aruvithura St.George's Church ,an Old famous Pilgrimage centre is situated in the Suburbs of Erattupetta.
Erattupetta has Syrian Christians, Hindus and Muslims living peacefully. The Muslims of Erattupetta are Tamil Muslims who made Kerala as their Home. They are called as Tamil Muslims in South and Central Kerala. These Tamil Muslims came from Tamil Nadu during Old days. In Erattupetta, Thodupuzha and parts of idukki and pathanamthitta districts Muslims are not Mappila Muslims, the Malayali Muslim Community elsewhere common in Kerala. Lebbas are another Muslim family in Erattupetta and are descendants of Shaikh Saeed Bava (a descendant of Ukasha bin Mihsan, a companion of Prophet Muhammed S.A.). Erattupetta was ancient route from Athirampuzha to Tamil Nadu.
Erattupetta can be easily reachable from North kerala via Angamaly-Muvattupuzha-Thodupuzha-Muttom route. It is well connected to Tamil Nadu via Kottayam-Kumali KK Road to Madurai. As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Erattupetta had a population of 29,675. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Erattupetta has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 76%. In Erattupetta, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age. Christians, Hindus and Muslims live here peacefully. Rubber is the major item of cultivation and this town is known for its popular church St. George of Aruvithura, and most popular mosqu Nainar juma masjid. both means the junction of two rivers). It is one the most fast developing township in central kerala.
