Irish Film & Television Academy [edit]

In 2006 the Irish Film and Television Academy was established. Its Membership is compirised of over 1,000 professionals in the fields of Irish and international television and film. The Irish Academy's stated aim is "the stimulation of original and creative production work, and the encouragement of excellence through recognition, education and leadership in film and television." [1]

The proposed ways to enforce this ideology are:

  • Encouraging high standards of art and technique in persons engaged in production work and to celebrate excellence through the annual Awards Ceremony.
  • Raising the profile of Irish talent & production, by actively promoting Irish excellence within the Academy and ensuring that achievements are recognised and respected throughout the world.
  • Establishing an academic programme of activities to nurture and encourage emerging Irish talent.
  • Safeguarding the integrity of the Irish Academy's annual Film and Television Awards.

Part of IFTA’s mission is to encourage excellence in Irish Film and Television by providing a platform for inspiration, creative development & collaboration within the industry. The Academy hosts a year-round calendar of learning & industry events for Members, including:

  • Educational Lectures, debates, master-classes, public interviews, Q&A's and workshops, along with networking evenings and social events.
  • Exclusive first-look screenings and previews.
  • The John Ford Ireland Film Symposium.
  • The Annual IFTA Tribute Event.
  • Industry Creative Forums.
  • The Annual Irish Film & Television Awards ceremony.

IFTA has established an official archive/catalogue of photography, publications, formal records of Nominees & Winners to ensure an accurate and comprehensive history of the Academy in the future.

IFTA LONDON [edit]

The Irish Film & Television Academy established its London branch in August 2011. Through the IFTA London events programme Members have access to unique networking opportunities; Irish talent is showcased to the UK industry and Members are invited to engage with and meet London based film/TV professionals. This initiative aims to help build new relationships and networks between the creative industries in Ireland and the UK. The London Branch is also open to Irish creative talent who frequently travel to work in the UK.

  • The Academy has also extended its Membership to international members and invite a core group of international jury Members in order to bring the work of Irish talent to the attention of prominent industry representatives across the world.

The Irish Film and Television Awards [edit]

The 1st Annual Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTA) took place in Dublin during November 2003 and having been running until 2012 when they took place in the Convention Centre in Dublin.

The Awards, presented by the Irish Film & Television Academy, are a platform to honour and celebrate outstanding Irish creativity, talent and achievement; to encourage a high standard of arts and technique in work produced.
