Italy was represented by Luca Barbarossa, with the song '"Vivo (Ti scrivo)", at the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 30 April in Dublin. As usual, the song and performer were chosen internally by broadcaster RAI.

On the night of the final Barbarossa performed 18th in the running order, following Luxembourg and preceding France. At the close of the voting "Vivo (Ti scrivo)" had received 52 points (the highest being 8s from Finland, France and Switzerland), placing Italy 12th of the 21 entries.
