The P B Lawrence Stakes, registered as the J J Liston Stakes is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race held under weight for age conditions, for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 1400 metres. It is held at Caulfield Racecourse in August.[1] Total prize money for the race is A$220,000.

Race History[edit]

The inaugural running of the race in 1949 was run at Flemington Racecourse over a distance of one mile and was won by the English bred horse One Up.[2]

Race name[edit]

The race name from 1949 to 2010 was called the J J Liston Stakes was named after John James Liston (1872–1944) who was a prominent horse owner and member of the Williamstown Race Club.[3] In 2011 the race name was changed to honour Peter B. Lawrence, who served 12 years as Chairman of the MRC.[4]
