John "Jack" Abbott, Jr. is a fictional character on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. The character is the oldest son of the Abbotts, one of the core families that was introduced to the show in the early 1980s. Terry Lester played Jack from 1980 until 1989, when he resigned from the show. He was replaced by current portrayer, Peter Bergman, who first aired on November 27, 1989.[1] The character briefly appeared on The Bold and the Beautiful in 1998.
Much of his history on the series revolves around his long-running conflict with rival businessman Victor Newman (Eric Braeden).
[edit] Character Background
In the beginning, Jack is a playboy who romances Jill Foster and Jabot models, like Diane Jenkins, before marrying Patty Williams. He marries her in an effort to convince his father to make him president of Jabot, but continues cheating on her. Patty discovers Jack having sex with Diane, which causes her to miscarry their baby. She tells him she wants to try for another baby. She later overhears him confiding in Jill that he does not want to be a father and only married Patty to get his father to promote him to president. Patty shoots him and loses the memory of the incident. When she regains her memory of it, he decides not to press charges, acknowledging that he brought it on himself.
After Jill marries his father, she and Jack have an affair. His ex-girlfriend, Lindsay Wells takes pictures of the encounter and blackmails him into marrying her. After he gets the pictures from her, he reveals that the marriage is invalid. Lindsay in turn sells the pictures she has left to Jill's enemy Katherine Chancellor, who then makes one of them into a puzzle and sends it piece by piece to John. He throws Jack and Jill out of the mansion and ends his marriage. John later manages to forgive them both.
Jack marries Victor Newman's ex-wife, Nikki, in the late 1980s. The marriage is short-lived, as Nikki continues to obsess over Victor. Nikki miscarrying Jack's baby is the final nail in the coffin. They both blame Victor for the loss.
In the 1990s, Jack becomes involved with Mari Jo Mason, but disowns her upon discovering that she is the one who shot Victor. Jack then reunites with and marries Luan Volien, a woman he had a romantic relationship with during the Vietnam war. They have a son together who was conceived during the war named Keemo Volien. Luan dies from a fatal illness and Keemo leaves shortly after her death.
Diane returns to town, and she and Jack become engaged, before she leaves him and marries Victor. Victor and Diane's marriage does not last long, and Diane reunites with Jack. However, she dumps him when she finds out he is merely using her in his war against Victor.
In 2001, Jack romances Newman Enterprises employee Phyllis Summers. They marry, but Diane's return to Genoa City, and the revelation that her infant son, Kyle, is Jack's, throws the marriage into turmoil. Jack and Phyllis fight Diane for custody, with Diane ultimately winning. Jack and Phyllis divorce in 2003, but remain close, until 2006, when Phyllis becomes pregnant as the result of an affair with Jack's former stepson, Nick Newman. He ends up aiding Phyllis in the birth of her daughter, as they are stuck in an elevator during an ice storm.
Jack begins dating Nick's ex-wife Sharon, and in March 2007 he asks her to marry him. Sharon accepts the proposal and they marry on April 23. Sharon was ecstatic with the way Jack had treated her son Noah Newman. But Brad Carlton, who Sharon had an affair with while she was still married to Nick is not ready to accept this and unsuccessfully tries to break the pair up.
In 2006, after a series of traumatic events, including his being ousted from Jabot as a result of a lawsuit, the death of his father and his having learned of Phyllis and Nick's affair, Jack becomes extremely bitter and plots against a number of individuals who wronged him, including Katherine, Jill (who fired him from Jabot) and his stepmother Gloria (whom he blamed for his father's murder conviction and imprisonment), as well as his longtime adversary Victor.
In the spring of 2007, Jack runs against Nikki in a race for a vacated seat in the Wisconsin State Senate. Phyllis and Sharon use a nanny cam to catch Nikki kissing David Chow on tape, release the footage on the Internet. Jack ultimately wins the election. He has a rocky career as a senator, and ultimately resigns in December 2007 because of various events that ultimately lead to a senatorial ethics hearing including Victor's public release of a private conversation between Jack and Ji Min Kim.
After Jack resigns from the Senate and Nick is fired from his job at Newman Enterprises, they start a new Internet & print magazine with Sharon and Phyllis. The project is named Restless Style. The venture results in fights among the foursome and exposes about various people in Genoa City.
Jack secretly works with his former stepmother, Gloria Bardwell to take over Jabot. Nick buys out Jack's share of Restless Style after receiving a line of credit from his father Victor. Jack works with Adam Wilson to get revenge on Victor, but it fails. Adam goes to prison, but Jack protects himself from being exposed. His deal with Gloria goes through and the Abbotts regain control at Jabot.
Jack has an affair with Mary Jane Benson after Sharon divorces him. Sharon tells him she is pregnant with a baby that might be his, his brother Billy's, or Nick's. He asks her to move back into the mansion with him so they can raise the baby together no matter who the father is. Though furious with Billy for having sex with Sharon, Jack proposes and wants to start a family with her anyway. But on the same night he finds out that Nick left Phyllis to be with Sharon again. In a moment of giving each other comfort Phyllis and Jack sleep together. A one-night-stand that is witnessed by a furious Mary Jane. He later begins non-committed sexual relationship with Mary Jane. After seeing Nick and Phyllis "together", Sharon goes to Jack and tell him that He is Faith's father even if she knows the baby is Nick's. During an argument over Jack's helping her Sharon tells Jack that Nick is the father not him. Phyllis suspects that Nick is the father and confronts Jack who denies it for Phyllis' sake. Nick goes to visit Sharon at the psychiatric ward and overhears Sharon confess to her mom that the baby is Nick's and swears her to secrecy..
On New Year's Eve, Jack proposed to Emily and she said yes.
