Jambo OpenOffice (Hello OpenOffice[4]) was an open source office suite based on OpenOffice.org written for Swahili speakers and runs on Linux and Microsoft Windows.[5]
It was developed by Kilinux and the first major project release took place in December 2004 as JambOO.o[5] based on OpenOffice.org 1.1.3.[1]
The project seems to have been inactive since 2005 [2] and the plans to update and sync Jambo OpenOffice to OpenOffice.org 2[6][7] were never finished.

[edit] Background
Swahili is a language spoken in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, and in parts of the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes by about 100 million people.[4] Most use Windows and Microsoft Office, but since that is not available in Swahili,[8] they have to use English or French.[4] The Open Swahili Localization Project (the long version for Kilinux) tried to reduce this threshold by localizing Open Office.[9] In June 2004 Microsoft announced a Swahili version of Windows.[10][11]
[edit] Distribution
Since the countries have major problem with their Internet and electricity infrastructure,[12] neither the finished Jambo OpenOffice nor the original source code could be sent over the Internet, so the team tried to distribute the office suite by delivering CD-ROMs to schools and universities.[8]
[edit] History
How can ICT develop Tanzania by adopting it in English in secondary education when only less than 12 per cent of the relevant age group enter into secondary schools?
The Kilinux project began in 2003 with the development of a glossary and a spell checker for OpenOffice.org.[9] In October 2004 Kilinux released a Swahili IT Glossary under the Creative Commons ShareAlike license containing over 1500 "computer related terms in English and their Swahili equivalents",[1][13] because the Swahili language did not contain any computer terminology.[8] After that the team was able to localize the 18,000 strings of OpenOffice.org [1][14] and the first version of Jambo OpenOffice was unofficially released on the 4 December 2004 for Linux only.[1][5][8]
The later officially released version was available for both Linux and Windows on 28 February 2005[15] after a Spanish company donated the cost for a Microsoft Visual Studio for doing essential optimizing of the source code.[16]
The Kilinux Project received an award in May 2006 as the best ICT project in the category education of the 2006 Stockholm challenge.[6][17][18]
