James Edgar Atwell is the current Dean of Winchester.[1] He was educated at Dauntsey's and Exeter College, Oxford [2] and ordained in 1971. He began his career with a curacy at St John the Evangelist, East Dulwich [3] after which he was Chaplain at Jesus College, Cambridge. From here he became Vicar of St Lawrence, Towcester[4] and then Provost of St Edmundsbury Cathedral[5] before becoming (automatically, due to the Cathedrals Measure) Dean of St Edmundsbury on 19 November 2000.[6] Having received Letters Patent from The Queen,[7] he was installed at a service on Lady day, 25 March 2006.[8]
