James Reid (born May 11, 1993) is a Filipino-Australian actor, singer and dancer with dual Filipino and Australian citizenship.[1] He rose to fame after being named as the Big Winner of Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash 2010. He is also known for his roles as Spencer Ziff in Good Vibes, Cross Sandford in Diary ng Panget: The Movie, and Timothy Odelle Pendleton in Talk Back and You're Dead.

Early life[edit]

James was born in Sydney, Australia on May 11, 1993 to an Australian father and a Filipino mother. He lived in Mosman which is located on the North Shore of Sydney. He has five brothers and two sisters. He has 7 siblings on his father side and 1 sibling on his mother side. His parents separated when he was only two years old. He lived there until he was 16 years old. He moved with only his father to the Philippines, leaving his mother, brothers and sister back in Australia. The reason of their move is because of financial trouble and his father needed some medical attention. James was having troubles adjusting in the country as he is experiencing problems with a different academics and social skills, especially the language. James was a gymnast and a swimmer. He used to study at Makati Science High School before his dad decided to enroll him in Karabar High School Distance Education Centre, an Australian distance-learning center located at Karabar, New South Wales, Australia.[2][3]

Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash 2010[edit]

James was only 16 years old when he entered the Pinoy Big Brother house as one of the 10 Teenternational housemates on April 30, 2010 (Day 22).[4][5]He celebrated his 17th birthday inside the house with his co-housemates giving him a surprise pool party. James is the only teenternational housemate who has Filipino blood. James was almost forced evicted twice during his stay inside the house, the first one was when he was brought to the hospital on May 21, 2010 (Day 43) because of chest pains, discoloration, and shortness of breath and the second one was when he was again brought to the hospital on June 1, 2010 (Day 53) for the same reason but this time together with his co-housemate Angelo Pasco. At first, doctors diagnosed him with costrochondritis or muscle pains in the rib/chest area. It was learned later on that he has a hole in one of his lungs that makes it hard for him to breathe. James was able to go back but he needs to rest and wear an oxygen tube for 1 week 24/7, he was then told by Big Brother that he can already remove his oxygen tube on June 8, 2010 (Day 60) but he still needs to wear it at night while he sleeps.[3]

On June 26, 2010 (Day 78), he was crowned as the Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash 2010 Big Winner after getting 179, 294 (19.75%) of the total votes just 1.05% ahead of the total votes received by the 2nd Teen Big Placer, Ryan Bang who got 169, 697 (18.70%) of the total votes, these marks as the closest race ever to become the Big Winner in the history of Pinoy Big Brother. As the Big Winner, James won P1,000,000 (plus the same amount to his chosen charity) from Jack n' Jill, a laptop computer from Sony Vaio, a 42-inch flat screen TV from Sony Bravia, an Asian tour package for two care of Von Dutch, P1,500,000 worth of bottled purified water business from Crystal Clear, and a condominium unit worth P3,000,000 courtesy of Globe Asiatique.[6][7][8][9][10][11]

Television Career[edit]

Right after winning PBB, James was offered a 2 year Star Magic contract with ABS-CBN. He was then paired with his co-housemate, Devon Seron in some ABS-CBN shows like Shoutout![12][13][14][15] and Good Vibes.[16][17][18][19][20][21][22] He was also paired with Yen Santos in Pintada.[23][24]

On August 26, 2014, James signed a two-year contract with ABS-CBN that marked his exclusivity to the network after two years of freelancing.[25][26] As part of the contract, Reid and his onscreen partner Nadine Lustre starred in their first TV series together as a loveteam entitled Wansapanataym Presents: My App #Boyfie which was also based on Wattpad story.[27][28][29][30][31]

Movie Career[edit]

In 2011, James did a short film entitled On Thin Ice by the De La Salle University students together with Verniece Enciso. The film is actually a thesis of the students of DLSU. The film seeks to promote non traditional sports in the Philippines, particularly figure skating.[32][33]

In 2012, Reid becomes a talent of Viva Artists Agency after signing a contract with Viva Entertainment. His launching movie was Diary ng Panget together with Nadine Lustre, Yassi Pressman and Andre Paras.[34][35][36][37][38][39] The movie is based on the best-selling book of the same name by HaveYouSeenThisGirl. The movie was released on April 2, 2014 and became a box-office hit earning at least 119.5 million pesos during its 4-week run.[40][41][42][43][44][45]

On June 2, 2014, it was confirmed that he and Lustre will star in another film entitled Talk Back and You're Dead together with Pressman and Joseph Marco. The film is also based on the best-selling book of the same name by Alesana Marie.[46] The movie will be co-produced by Viva Films and Skylight Films. During its 4-week run the movie has grossed 79.8 million pesos according to Box Office Mojo.[47]

On August 29, 2014, it was confirmed that Reid will reprise his role as Timothy Odelle Pendleton in the Talk Back and You're Dead sequel entitled Never Talk Back to a Gangster.[48][49]

On October 22, 2014, it was announced that he and Lustre will do another movie entitled Para sa Hopeless Romantic together with Julia Barretto, Iñigo Pascual, AJ Muhlach and Shy Carlos. The movie is based on a book written by Marcelo Santos III and will be under Viva Films and Skylight Films.[50][51]

On December 1, 2014, it was revealed by Lustre that both she and James together with Pressman and Paras will reprise their roles as Eya Rodriguez, Cross Sandford, Lory Keet and Chad Jimemez respectively, in the sequel of their movie entitled Diary ng Panget 2.[52]

On July 24, 2011, James together with Bret Jackson launched their first digital album entitled We Are Whatever on ASAP Rocks. The album features four original songs composed by James and Bret themselves.[53][54]

On 2013, James launched his self-titled debut album that is composed of two covers and four original songs, two of which is composed by James himself.[55][56]

He also lend his voice to the Diary ng Panget: The Movie Soundtrack and Talk Back and You're Dead Soundtrack, the official soundtracks of his two movies.[57][58]

Personal life[edit]

During his stay inside the PBB house, he was linked to three girl housemates namely Tricia Santos, Ann Li and Devon Seron, the latter became his first official loveteam. He then later admitted that he used to court Devon.[3][59][60][61][62][63] He was in a relationship with Ericka Villongco, 1/2 of the singing duo Krissy & Ericka from January 2011 until they broke up in March 2014, the relationship lasted for three and a half years.[64][65][66][67][68][69]

He is known to be best friends to fellow PBB housemates Ryan Bang, Bret Jackson and Ivan Dorschner. He is also close with fellow actor Sam Concepcion, whom he met while filming Good Vibes.
