Jim Murphy is an American award-winning author of more than 30 fiction and non-fiction books for children and young adults, most of which have an historical focus. His most recent books are "A Savage Thunder" (Scholastic, 2009) and "Truce" (Simon & Schuster, 2009). His books have been awarded a Newbery Honor twice: in 2004 for An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 and in 1996 for The Great Fire.
Other titles include: the historical novel, Desperate Journey, The Boys' War, Blizzard, and The Real Benedict Arnold. His books have received many additional awards including: both an ALA Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award as well as an ALA Robert F. Sibert Honor Book Award; National Book Award Finalist Medal; 3 NCTE Orbis Pictus awards; 3 Jefferson Cup Awards; 2 SCBWI’s Golden Kite Award; The Washington Post/Children’s Book Guild Award for Distinguished Nonfiction; and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. On 18 January 2010 it was announced that he was the recipient of the ALA's Margaret Edwards Award, for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults.
He is married to writer/editor Alison Blank.
