[edit] Coaching career
Blake resigned his position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Sunday, September 5, 2010.[1] Previously, Blake had served as the defensive line coach on Bill Callahan's staff at the University of Nebraska from 2004 to 2006. He also held the same position at Mississippi State University in 2003.
Prior to taking a position at Mississippi State University, Blake served as the head coach for the Oklahoma Sooners from 1996 to 1998. Blake compiled a career record of 12–22, the worst three-year stretch in school history. Despite being in way over his head, the fault wasn't all his. The Sooners were still suffering from the Barry Switzer scandal back in 1988, and recruiting had been slightly above average since. Blake changed that with 3 excellent recruiting classes, with several of his players making major contributions to Bob Stoops' 2000 championship team.
Prior to his arrival in Norman, Blake had served as the defensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys, working alongside former UNC coach Butch Davis (2007–11) as well as former Sooner and then Cowboys head coach Barry Switzer. The Dallas Cowboys won two Super Bowls (1993 & 1995) during Blake's stint. Blake also worked as a defensive assistant at Oklahoma in the early 1990s under Gary Gibbs.
[edit] Controversy
In 2010, Blake resigned from North Carolina at the same time of an investigation into player's relationships with agent Gary Wichard.[1] Currently, Blake is suspected of being an employee and receiving cash benefits from Gary Wichard.[1] In 1995, as an assistant for the Dallas Cowboys, Blake made accusations that quarterback Troy Aikman was homosexual and a racist. However Aikman's minority teammates came to his defense and refuted those accusations, further Aikman later married and had two children.[1][1] Blake destroyed recruiting records after he was fired as Oklahoma's coach in 1998.[1]
