John Shore, 1st Baron Teignmouth (5 October 1751 – 14 February 1834) was a British politician who served as Governor-General of India from 1793 to 1797.
He married Charlotte Cornish, daughter of James Cornish of Teignmouth, on 14 February 1786. He was shortly afterwards offered a place on the Supreme Council in Calcutta, returning in 1790.
In 1792, he was appointed Governor-General of India and made a baronet. He served as Governor-General until 1797 and in 1798 was created Baron Teignmouth in the Peerage of Ireland.
Shore was the first president of the British and Foreign Bible Society.[1]
A close friend of the orientalist Sir William Jones (1746–1794), Shore edited a memoir of Jones's life in 1804, containing many of Jones's letters.
His title passed on his death to his eldest son Charles John Shore, 2nd Baron Teignmouth.
