Jonathan Peter Marland, Baron Marland (born 14 August 1956) is a British businessman and former Treasurer of the Conservative Party. He was awarded a life peerage in 2006 as Baron Marland, of Odstock in the County of Wiltshire.

Marland was educated at Shrewsbury School, an independent school for boys (now co-educational) in the county town of Shrewsbury in Shropshire.

He is married to Penny, a probation officer. The couple have four children, and live at Odstock Manor, Wiltshire. [1]

Marland was one of the founding directors of Jardine Lloyd Thomson plc,[2] a multinational insurance business and also founded AppleClaim, the insurance company, at Lloyd's of London. He led the acquisitions of Hunter Wellington Boots, and Insurance Capital Partners.

In 2007 he led the closure of the British manufacturing operations of Hunter Wellington Boots and remove of the manufacturing of the Hunter product range offshore, largely to Chinese owned and run factories within China.[3]

[edit] Party and parliamentary roles

A Conservative party activist, Marland was the Parliamentary Candidate for the target seat of Somerton and Frome at the 2001 general election, coming second to the incumbent Liberal Democrat MP, David Heath.

In 2003, Marland was appointed as Treasurer to the Conservative Party, fulfilling the role until 2007, and subsequently became a key part of the team which saw the election of Boris Johnson as Mayor of London. Lord Marland is also the Treasurer and a Trustee of the Atlantic Partnership.[4]

In 2009, Marland was made an opposition Whip in the House of Lords, as well as an opposition spokesman for the Cabinet Office, and the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

In 2010, Marland was made Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Energy and Climate Change,[5] serving on Her Majesty's Government frontbench.

In May 2011 he was appointed as the Chairman of the British Business Ambassadors by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI)[6]

Away from business and politics, Marland has interests in the arts and sport.

He is a Trustee of the Peggy Guggenheim Museum (UK), and a Trustee of The Churchill Centre.[8] Lord & Lady Marland are patrons of the Holburne Museum, Bath.

He founded The Sports Nexus, an independent body set up to examine the structures, governance and accountability of an array of sports. He chairs the Sports Nexus Trust.[9] He is the President of Salisbury City F.C., a member of the MCC and a Director of Wisden. In January 2009 he challenged Giles Clarke for the chairmanship of the ECB. He failed, despite having pledged to raise a £100m capital fund for development across all 18 counties if elected as chairman.[10]
