[edit] Football career
After having finished his youth career with Leixões SC, Gonçalves went on to have stints with modest clubs, before returning to the Matosinhos outfit in 2004. He would be an instrumental part in the club from the very beginning, helping it promote from the second level into the top flight in 2006–07, as he contributed with 26 matches and five goals.
In the 2007–08 season, Gonçalves scored seven league goals for Leixões, a squad-best, as the team avoided relegation in the last matchday. On September 1, 2008, on the last day of the summer transfer deadline, he signed for €1 million with La Liga outfit Racing de Santander,[1] being rarely used throughout the season.
In June 2009, Gonçalves was loaned back to Portugal, with Vitória de Guimarães, in a season-long loan. As the Minho outfit finished in sixth position, he was irregularly used, not managing to score one goal in official matches; he was subsequently released by Racing but stayed in Portugal, joining S.C. Olhanense.
