Jos. Debono Jewellers is one of the largest and long standing jewellers in Malta. The organisation was founded by Carmelo Debono in 1899 when there were only a handful of jewellers in Malta. Joseph Debono (Carmelo's son) continued the business, but went through a hard time having to survive the war, and lost two outlets together with the bulk of the stock. The company is currently in its third generation, and run by Joseph's three sons.
In December 2007, it was the victim of one of the largest jewellery hold ups to take place in Malta with over Eur 55,000 in diamonds stolen. Three days later the robber was arrested and arraigned in court, although the diamonds were never recovered.
