Joshua William "Josh" Thompson (born 25 February 1991) is an English footballer who plays for Chesterfield as a centre back, on loan from Scottish Premier League side Celtic.

Thompson has previously played in League One with Stockport and Rochdale. He has also played for England under-19 team.

Thompson was born in Bolton, Greater Manchester and raised in Atherton.[2]

Thompson progressed through the Stockport County youth system.[2] He had trials at Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion during the 2008–09 season.[3] Peterborough United had a bid for Thompson rejected in July 2009.[4]

Thompson signed for Scottish Premier League team Celtic on 8 August 2009.[5] He made his debut coming on as a substitute for Stephen McManus at home against Falkirk on 16 January 2010.[6] He made his first Celtic start in a 4–1 away victory against St Johnstone on 24 January 2010 and scored his first goal for Celtic in a 3–0 victory over St. Johnstone on 20 March 2010.[7] He followed this up with two goals for Celtic in a 2–1 victory over Motherwell on 13 April 2010.[8]

On 20 August 2010 Thompson joined League One team Rochdale on a season-long loan.[9]

On 8 August 2011 Thompson moved to Championship side Peterborough United on a season-long loan.[10]

On 17 January 2011, after making just one substitute appearance for Peterborough United, Thompson moved to League One side Chesterfield for the remainder of the season.

In July 2010, Thompson appeared for England under-19s in the European Under-19 Championship making 3 appearances in the finals,[11] before his team lost to Spain in the semi-final.[12]
