Julie Rogers is a fictional character in the 1976-1981 television series Charlie's Angels. She was portrayed by Tanya Roberts. She was the last Angel hired for the Townsend Agency for the show's five-season run, joining in 1980-1981. She filled the position left by Tiffany Welles, taking over her company car, the orange Ford Pinto.
[edit] Profile
Julie is a native of the Bronx, New York. Her father abandoned her when she was young and her mother was an alcoholic; Julie was practically raised on the streets.[1] Although Angel Kelly Garrett was initially assigned a "streetwise" personality, it faded over time to match Jaclyn Smith's more sensitive and refined personality. The producers jumped at the chance to give this new character the tough-talking, rough edges that had been lost. As explained in the show titles, Julie had attended a modeling school, and was not previously trained to be a policewoman.
Julie had previously had trouble with the law for various misdemeanors and had even served time. She was working with her probation officer, Harry Stearns (who had become a father figure to her), as an informant, when she met the Angels on the Season 5 opener, "Angel in Hiding" in Hawaii. As a model, Julie was helping investigate a modeling agency; when the probation officer was killed, Kris and Kelly convinced her to assist their formal investigation.[1] Julie helped clinch the case, and Agency owner Charlie decided to hire her, assisting her in acquiring a "temporary Private Investigator's" license while she was to study for the actual licence.[2] (We never learn if she gets her credentials). Due to her not being a graduate of the police academy as all other Angels had been, the Season 5 opener was amended to "Once upon a a time, there were three beautiful girls: two of them graduated from the police academy, the other graduated from a top school for models"[3].
In sharp contrast to her predecessor Tiffany, Julie spent her first episode talking tough and clinging to the roof of a speeding car. The next five episodes were also set in Hawaii allowing many scenes of the willing Roberts to appear in bikinis, and these episodes also marked the first scene featuring all three Angels in bikinis. In "Angels of the Deep", Julie seems to have an interest in scuba diving. This also marked the first time the producers would have their hair color concept in use. Kelly, a brunette, Kris a Blond, and auburn head Julie. Unlike any of her predecessors, Julie doesn't have any connections to the agency or the other angels
Much like Kris's early episodes, Julie is shown as naive and inexperienced, and of course, lacks the technical knowledge of the other Angels. But the other staff take a protective and encouraging attitude with Julie. She does get to show off some rather impressive fight skills in the episode "Attack Angels". Julie also has special affinity with a runaway teenager in one episode, showing some attempts at deeper characterization.
