- March 2–5 – President of the United States, George W. Bush visits India. United States signs landmark nuclear deal with India pending approval from the US Congress and Indian Parliament.
- March 7 – 2006 Varanasi bombings: Terrorist attack in Varanasi kills at least 15 people and leaves more than 50 injured.
- April 10 – Fire at Brand India Fair at Meerut Victoria Park in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, kills 100.
- May –Medical doctors started strike against central government decision on reservation for OBC (other backward classes) in Medical Institution.
- July 6 – The Nathula Pass between India and China, sealed during the Sino-Indian War, re-opens for trade after 44 years.
- July 11 – 11 July 2006 Mumbai train bombings: A series of coordinated bomb attacks strikes several commuter trains in Mumbai, India during evening rush hour.
- November 20 – 2006 West Bengal train disaster: A suspected terrorist attack kills five people on a train in a remote area of West Bengal.
