The Köln International School of Design (in short: KISD) is an institution of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Köln) and offers an interdisciplinary study program in the field of design. In 2002 – eleven years after the Cologne Model of design education was initiated in 1991 – the school was renamed to Köln International School of Design.

In 1991 Michael Erlhoff and his colleagues founded the Department of Design at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences[1]. In the 2009 term, circa 25 % of the student body came from abroad.

Besides a four years diploma-program, the school offer the new Master of European Design-program. Furthermore it is planned to offer various new postgraduate Master-programs.

Key aspects of the areas of expertise are e.g. healthcare, mobility[disambiguation needed ], work environment, knowledge and educational organisations. This twelve areas of expertise are the focus of the project-oriented design programme. Students have to enroll for at least ten areas of expertise and can develop their own main focusses.
