[edit] General information
KCPM is a semi-satellite (partial rebroadcaster) of KCPO-LP in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, though it airs separate commercials, station identifications and sometimes different syndicated programming due to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) market regulations. KCPO-LP is still fully simulcasted on KCPL-LP in Rapid City, South Dakota.
The station dos not have a local newscast, and its programs includes syndicated programs (off-network comedy, court shows, talk shows, and movies), infomercials and religious programming past midnight. Popular syndicated shows on KCPM include The Jerry Springer Show, Maury, and Family Guy. KCPM also simulcasts KSTC broadcasts of Minnesota State High School League football, hockey, and basketball tournaments.
[edit] History
Originally, KCPM was a UPN affiliate launched in 2003 to fill the void when Minneapolis/St. Paul UPN affiliate KMSP-TV was being dropped by area cable television systems due to its affiliation switch to Fox. KCPM was the first full-time UPN affiliate in North Dakota (Fox affiliates KNDX & KXND serving the western half of North Dakota aired UPN programming after primetime). Fox affiliate KVRR aired UPN programming after primetime until 1998 since KMSP-TV was available on cable in most areas.
[edit] Digital television
Because its original construction permit was granted after the FCC finalized the digital television allotment plan on April 21, 1997 [1], the station did not receive a companion channel for a digital television station. Instead, on or before February 17, 2009, which is the end of the digital TV conversion period for full-service stations, KCPM was required to turn off its analog signals and turn on its digital signals (called a "flash-cut").
[edit] MyNetworkTV
On January 24, 2006, The WB and UPN networks announced they would merge. The newly combined network would be called The CW, the letters representing the first initial of its corporate parents CBS (the parent company of UPN) and the Warner Bros. unit of Time Warner. The merger would take effect on-the-air on September 18, 2006. In response to the merger, News Corporation (the owner of Fox) launched another network called MyNetworkTV on September 5, 2006.
KCPM rejected The CW and affiliated with MyNetworkTV. In September 2005, KCPM replaced the UPN logo in its logo with the logo of Central Plains Media. The new KCPM MyNetworkTV logo was introduced in August 2006, and KCPM dropped UPN entirely on September 4, 2006. WDAY-TV launched a digital subchannel to carry The CW, which replaced cable-only station WBFG on September 18, 2006.
[edit] Over-the-air signal off the air
The station filed a notice to the FCC to cease terrestrial operations February 15, 2008 and filed notice on May 22, 2008 to suspend operations. According to FCC records, the station's owners have suspended operations on financial grounds, due to the economy.[1] According to reports from viewers[citation needed], KCPM remained available on cable, although not available over the air. By November 2008, the station resumed over-the-air broadcasting after the FCC rejected the notice to cease terrestrial operations. On June 12, 2009, the station turned off their digital signal because of financial hardship.[2] On May 10, 2010, the station filed a new application to operate at 11.1 kW.[3] and resumed broadcasting over-the-air in June 2010.
[edit] Translators
KCPM rebroadcasts on the following translators (low-powered rebroadcasters):
- KVNJ-LP Channel 33 Fargo, North Dakota
- K35HT Channel 35 Jamestown, North Dakota (construction permit)
