[edit] History
The station signed on the air on May 14, 2000. Despite transmitting its signal on UHF channel 21, KNBN identifies as NewsCenter1 on air. KNBN is carried on local cable systems on channel 10. Before KNBN signed on, NBC was provided via cable from KUSA in Denver- before that, KEVN served as the primary NBC station in the area.
[edit] Digital television
Because it was granted an original construction permit after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 21, 1997, the station did not receive a companion channel for a digital television station. Instead, KNBN turned off its analog signal and turned on its digital signal on the same channel (called a "flash-cut").
KNBN flash-cut to digital on February 1, 2009 to televise the 2009 Super Bowl in high-definition.[1]
The CW affiliate KWBH-LP is carried on a digital subchannel of KNBN (channel 21.2 PSIP). MyNetworkTV and RTN are carried on a third subchannel (channel 21.3 PSIP); this was also aired on KKRA-LP before it switched to a simulcast of KNBN's main NBC programming in 2009.
