KMIC is a Radio Disney station serving the Houston, Texas market. KMIC broadcasts on 1590 kHz and is under ownership of The Walt Disney Company through Radio Disney Houston, LLC.
[edit] History
This station began as KATL on 1590 kHz in 1947 and was the sixth old surviving station licensed in the Houston area. The station launch was postponed by engineering problems. KATL finally went on the air at 6 PM on the night of May 12, but under special authority since it hasn't received its official license. KATL became an affiliate of Gordon McLendon’s Liberty Broadcasting System.
When KATL was sold in 1954 it was bought by two Louisiana businessmen, Jules Paglin and Stanley Ray, for their OK group of stations targeted at African American listeners and the call letters changed to KYOK. Their Urban Contemporary Gospel format lasted on and off for over 4 decades, it also aired an Urban Contemporary (or Soul) format within that time frame.
Other Formats that were on 1590 AM KYOK
During 1991-1992 KYOK was know as YO 1590 Raps playing only Rap music from artists like Digital Underground, and Ice Cube.
From Fall of 1992 to Fall of 1994 It was a KHYS Y-98.5 "Hits and Dustie's" simucast along with KJOJ 103.3 playing Urban Adult Contemporary music.
From Fall of 1994 to 1996 the station played Soul Oldies "AM 1590 Solid Gold Soul"
In late 1996 the station flipped back to Gospel 1590 AM. It lasted on the 1590 dial until 1999 which the owners sold the station to The Walt Disney Company Disney/ABC Radio and switched it to its current programming as KMIC in 1999.
As for KYOK and its Gospel format, it has been moved to AM frequency 1140 kHz.
