Kalutara Vidyalaya National School is one of the major school in Kalutara District and Sri Lanka. It was founded by Sir Cyril De Zoysa in 1941 as the twin brother of Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya.

Kalutara Vidyalaya was founded in 6th of January 1941 by Sir Cyril De Zoysa. The college born as the twin brother of Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya, the girl’s school. In 13th of January 1941 College officially started with 11 teachers and 56 students. At the beginning college was lead by Mr. P. De S. Kularatne (principal of "Ananda College"), Mr. J.N. Jenendradasa (principal of "Nalanda College"), Mr. E.W. Adikaram (principal of "Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte", ) .Mr. P.C.P. Samaraweera was the first principal of the college. College’s first motto was “Uthsaha wanthan jananan kin nasadhiyanthi”. But after it changed to “De Samaya Surakinu”. Mr.Anangalal Athukorala was the composer of school anthem. He was studied at Santiniketan in India.
After only six months the college becomes a senior secondary school. At the beginning Kalutara Vidyalaya was at the “Martin Bungalow” as a mixed school. But in 7th of January 1942 Kalutara Balika was established in “Clammily house” by Mr. P. De S. Kularatne. So Kalutara Vidyalaya became a boy’s school. The first chapter of Kalutara Vidyalaya ended in 18th of March 1942 because the college was taken by the Royal Air Force to their use during the II World War.
But after a short brake Kalutara Vidyalaya was restarted at Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya. Sir Cyril De Zoysa noticed that it is hard to develop two schools and handover his “Brookline House” to the Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya. In 15th of April in 1946 college entered to free education and handover to the government. In 1998 college become a National School.
Today the collage is able to win lots of achievements. College produced lots of great citizens such as professors, physicians, lawyers, engineers, army officers, sportsmen, politicians and many more others in different fields. Present Kalutara Vidyalaya is among the best schools in Sri Lanka and it is the best school in Kalutara City. It is a premier Buddhist College in the island. Now Collage is accomplish with about 3500 students and more than 120 teachers. The present the school is leading by Mr. K. Rathnewera Parera.

[edit] Battle of the Mangoustine
Battle of the Mangoustine is the annual cricket match between Kalutara Vidyalaya and Tissa Central College. It started in 1958. Mr. Herbart Silva skippered Kalutara Vidyalaya in the 1st Battle of the Mangoustine. Today it has become a major school cricket match in the island. It creates valuable cricket players for Sri Lanka such as Dulip Liyanage, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Malinga Bandara.
