The KaosPilots is a 3 year long alternative business school located in the Latin Quarter of Århus, Denmark.
The KaosPilots is in English and accepts 35-37 international students per year in the ages 21–31, and is funded by EU and students' school fees. The education was in Danish up until August 2005 as the students were from countries with a Scandinavian language like Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Iceland.
The KaosPilot program teaches in the fields of leadership, new business design, process design and project design for challenges in business, society and organizations. The program focuses on personal development, value-based entrepreneurship, creativity and social innovation.
The KaosPilot school, was founded by Uffe Elbæk in 1991 and was nominated by Business Week in 2007 as a top Design School. The KaosPilot program has gone on to inspire schools in countries such as Australia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and The Netherlands.
The school aims to attract and train social entrepreneurs and creative leaders.
The curriculum is divided into four disciplines: Creative Business Design, Creative Leadership Design, Creative Project Design and Creative Process Design. Each discipline is divided into 4 components. The components build upon all previous components, and not only the ones within the specific discipline. The components are structured around a client assignment or a personal- or a group project.
The program is delivered by a core staff and a vast pool of lecturers and partners.
The pedagogical platform is called opportunity-based-pedagogy (i.e. to see, understand, create and act upon opportunities) and is rooted in many different approaches such as reflection over action, appreciative inquiry, systems thinking, positive psychology action learning, coaching and mentoring.
School-work is very much based on group collaboration and the team uses various brainstorming techniques to develop ideas, mind mapping to document their work and energizing games to keep up the working spirit.
There are no classes or subjects, but the school year is divided into several phases where students focus on one subject for a period of time.
The education takes 3 years and the same team goes through the whole education together.
The first year is focused on methods, theory and practical project work introducing the 3 core areas, Project design (project development and management), Business design (business development and management) and Process design (process management and leadership) to the new students.
–Process management and International Project management
The second year at the KaosPilots is focused on process design and process management, including the design and facilitation of processes for external customers. In the spring-semester the team goes on a 3-months Outpost in a foreign country, implementing a project for an external customer in another environment.
–Project & Business Design
The third year at the KaosPilots is focused on Business Design (entrepreneurship and building the business plan), individual world practicum and the individual project leading to the final exam.
