From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Karaikal port is a new deep sea water porter being constructed in Vanjore near Karaikal, puducherry. 600 acres of land was leased out to MARG corporation by Puducherry government in year 2005 for 30 years and can be renewed for 10 years every decade thereafter. The port will have a total of nine berths and is constructed for primary transport of coal and cement. The port was expected to be operational from March 2009.[1]
The port development is carried out by Karaikal Port Private Ltd. (KPPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of MARG Limited aligning with Pembianaan Redzai Sdn Bhd of Malaysia.[2]
The first phase of the project to construct two berths, each 213-metre-long, were complete and dredging has been completed to a depth of 9 metre. M.V.Beluga Fan Fare, a “project cargo specialist vessel,” was the first vessel to dock at the port.[3]
