Kartika (Hindi: कार्तिक Marathi:कार्तिक, Kārtik {{ne:कार्तिक}} or Sanskrit: कार्तिक[1] Kārtika, Telugu: కర్తీక, Kannada"ಕಾರ್ತಿಕ" Kārtik, Tamil: கார்த்திகை, Bengali: কার্ত্তিক Kartik), is a month of Hindu and Bengali calendars, named after the Hindu god, Kartikeya.

In the lunar Hindu calendar, Kartika begins with the new moon in November and is the eighth month of the year except in Gujarat, where it marks the new year that falls on Diwali. In the solar religious calendar used in Tamil Nadu, Kartikai begins with the Sun's entry into Scorpio and is the eight month of the year.

In the Vaishnava calendar, Damodara governs this month.

In the reformed Indian national civil calendar, Kartika is the eighth month of the year and begins on 23 October and ends on 21 November. [Dates are not fixed like 23 October to 21 November It is based on the position of the moon]

Diwali falls in this month. The festival of Kartik Poornima (15th day Full Moon) falls in this month, celebrated as Dev Deepavali in Varanasi. This coincides with the nirvana of the Jain Tirthankara - Mahavira and the birth of the Sikh Guru Nanak Guru Nanak Jayanti. And also, the well known festival, for the god of Sabarimalai, Ayyappan's garland festival. In Kartika, the swamys will start their fasting, on various dates depending on your temple. Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa !

Kartika (কার্ত্তিক Kartik) is the seventh month of the Bengali Calendar used in Bangladesh and eastern India. It begins in mid-October of the Gregorian calendar. The name of the month is derived from the name of the star Krittika (কৃত্তিকা). In the Bikram Sambat in use in Nepal, Kartika is the seventh month, beginning on 18 October and lasting until 15 November.
