As of the census of India 2001, Kayalpattinam had a population of 32,664 comprising 15,010 males and 17,654 females, making the sex ratio (number of females per thousand males) of the town to 1,176. A total of 4,275 people were under six years of age and the child sex ratio (number of females per thousand males under six years of age) stood at 908. The town had an average literacy of 88.69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. A total of 2,627 comprising 9.25% of the population belonged to Scheduled Castes (SC) and 14 comprising 0.05% of the population belonged to Scheduled tribes (ST). There were are total of 7,320 households in the town. As of 2001, Kayalpattinam had a total of 7,566 main workers: 7 cultivators, 13 agricultural labourers, 155 in house hold industries and 7,391 other workers. There was a total of 610 marginal workers: 4 marginal cultivators, 2 marginal agricultural labourers, 46 marginal workers in household industries and 558 other marginal workers.
Most of Muslims here follow Shafiee school and Faasiyatush shadhiliya Tariqa (Shadhiliyya Sufi order). Head Quarters of this tariqa in Tamil Nadu zawiyatul fassiyatush shadhiliya is located here. There are followers of Qadiriyya Sufi order connected to Mahlara and a few wahabis.Maqbara of Hazrat Kazi Syed Alauddin brother of Hazrat Kazi Syed Tajuddin the fore father of Madurai Maqbara Hazrats' and of all the Syeds living in Kazimar Street, Madurai is located here.
