As of 2001[update] India census[1], Khelari had a population of 18,699. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Khelari has an average literacy rate of 59%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 49%. In Khelari, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
