Khulna Engineering College (1967-1986)Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Khulna (1986-2003)
Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (Bengali: খুলনা প্রকৌশল ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় Khulna Prokoushol O Projukti Bishshobiddaloe) generally addressed as KUET, formerly known as BIT, Khulna, is one of the leading public universities of Bangladesh giving special emphasis in the Engineering and Technological Education and research.
KUET offers engineering education in both undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and also offers degree and conducts research in basic sciences at post-graduate level. At present, around 3460 students including some foreign students are studying in KUET's in 15 Academic Department under 3 Faculty. For the academic session (2012-2013), total 725 top graded students of the country are enrolled yearly in undergraduate level through very competitive, transparent and standard admission test. Besides, quality level graduate study and research in M.Sc Engineering, M.Phil and Ph.D. Programs are running in its nourished environment. Students from foreign counties are also study in this institute. More than 219 instructors are engaged in teaching at this university in various disciplines.
The University has 101 acres campus with academic buildings, auditorium complex, halls of residence, teachers dormitory and residences, laboratories, engineering workshops, administrative building, cafeteria, gymnasium and other establishments. KUET offers B. Sc. Engineering degree in eight undergraduate programs ans M. Sc. Engineering, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in several postgraduate programs. Every year, about 725 students get enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs to study engineering, planning and science in this institution. In undergraduate admission test, only about top 12% students can get admitted among 6,000 selected candidates.
Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), which started functioning from September 2003, is one of the five engineering universities of Bangladesh in higher education, research and development in engineering and technology. This university was established as Khulna Engineering College in 1974; the college was later converted to a degree-awarding autonomous institution called Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Khulna in July 1986 through a government ordinance (No. XXI, 1986).
The Institute was upgraded and renamed as Khulna University of Engineering and Technology in September 2003 under the “Khulna University of Engineering and Technology Act, 2003.” KUET is financed by the government through the University Grants Commission. The university is an autonomous statutory organization of the Government of Bangladesh. There are various statutory bodies like Syndicate, Academic Council, Finance Committee, Planning and Development Committee, Committee for Advance studies and Research, Academic Committees, etc. for policy- and decision-making on aspects of the university under the frame work of the Act.
There are several national and international research projects running in KUET. Among those in the Department of Civil Engineering European Commission (EC) funded four projects are running now successfully.
Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) is situated at Fulbarigate, the North-West part of the Khulna City, which is the third largest south-western divisional city in Bangladesh.
The Institute campus is about 15 (fifteen) kilometers away from the zero point of Khulna City, which is well-connected to the major city centers by open and wide roads. It is located at about 12 (twelve) kilometers away from the Inter-District Bus Terminal and approximately 14 (fourteen) kilometers from the Khulna Railway Station.
The Institute campus covers an area of 101 acres. It is divided into four functional zones: (i) Residential zone for the students, (ii) Residential zone for the faculties and staffs, (iii) Academic zone for the academic buildings & workshops, and (iv) Cultural-cum-social and recreational zone for the students. Being square in-shape, the third zone has been located at mid-way between the two residential zones in order to reduce the walking distances.
The main academic building accommodates the different teaching and research facilities. However, each department is a separate entity with a courtyard around and all the departments constitute an integrated complex. Heavy Engineering Laboratories are positioned on the ground floor or other separate workshops. While light Laboratories, classrooms and project rooms are located on the upper floors. Separate offices have been provided to every member of the teaching staffs next to his/her laboratory. Large lecture theatres with the modern accessories and equipments for sound and projection are located in the courtyards between departments for common use. The campus also offers facilities like Teachers and Staff Clubs, Medical Center, Departmental Store, Bank with ATM Booth, Post Office and Playground etc. The Centre of coordinating the Students Welfare Activities provides all sorts of extra-curricular facilities to the students for their mental and physical development..
The university operates two libraries: the General Library and the Reference Library. The General Library provides in-house reading and short-time borrowing of books and other reference material. The Reference Library provides the in-place reading.
All students and faculty can enjoy these facilities for more than 10 hours per working day. Audio-visual systems are available for audio and video documents. The General Library System has more than 30,000 books and 5,000 journals and periodicals in its collection. A library automation process will be available within short time. Moreover, the library is enriched every year by collecting recent books and journals.
Besides the general library system each academic department maintains a rent-based library from which students can borrow textbooks at a nominal rate for the whole semester. Recently KUET library enters into full automation system.
Central Computer Center
KUET has its own VSAT facility with a bandwidth of 512 KByte/s for upload and 1024 KByte/s for download. The Broadband speed is 20Mbit/s and ISP is BTCL. It operates a large computing network equipped with six IBM servers. The system has more than 250 workstations interconnected by 1 GB optical fiber line and six optical switches. All stations are equipped with latest version computers with necessary printing, scanning and CD writing facilities. All students and faculty have access to the network.
Each academic department maintains Local Area Network (LAN), which are further connected with the central network backbone. The central computer network provides computing software for researchers of various disciplines. KUET has own WiFi Network in the EEE and ECE department. Recently KUET has started WiFi Network in its Director of Student Walefare(DSW) and Central Computer Center(CCC) arena.
KUET offers full-time undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs in Engineering and Science. Currently it awards 8 undergraduate engineering and 6 postgraduate engineering degrees. For doctoral research it awards degrees in six engineer and three science fields. It also awards M.Phil. in three science subjects.
