Ciarán (
/ˈkɪərən/; Irish: [ˈciəɾˠaːn̪ˠ] or [ciəˈɾˠaːn̪ˠ]), Ciaran[1][2] in Scottish Gaelic, Ceiran, Kieran, Keeran, Kyran, Kiaran, Keiran, Kieren, Kieron, Keiron or Kiernan, is a personal name meaning "small dark one".[3] Ciarán comes from the Irish word "Ciar" which means black or dark.[4][5] Ciar can be linked back to Ciar, son of Fergus, King of Ulster.[6] It is linked with many names, like Kerry meaning Ciar's People.[7] The name is rendered in Latin as Queranus. It is also used in the vernacular of older rural Irish folk, such as farmers in West County Clare to refer to small, irregular lumps of peat.

- Saint Ciarán Saighir (the Elder) was an early Irish bishop, the founder of Seir-Kieran, County Offaly. He was the first bishop of Ossory. The saint is sometimes referred to as one of four bishops to have preceded Saint Patrick in Ireland. He is one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. He is also widely regarded as the patron saint of Cornwall.
- Saint Ciarán of Clonmacnoise from Connaught, born about 514, was the founder of Clonmacnoise Abbey in the early 6th century. He died on 9 September 546, aged about 32. He is buried in the remains of his little church. He is also one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
- Saint Ciarán of Disert-Kieran, County Meath, called by the Irish annalists 'Ciarán the Devout', wrote a 'Life of St Patrick'. He died in 775 on 14 June, on which day his feast is celebrated.
