Klipfolio Dashboard is a business dashboard for Microsoft Windows. The program uses different Klips to display KPIs and information that a user or organization chooses to see at all times. There are over four thousand different Klips which can display information form data sources like Salesforce.com or Google Analytics as well as weather conditions, e-mail, news, comic strips, and thousands more.

The Klipfolio Dashboard application has three variants:

  1. Klipfolio Dashboard: an enterprise dashboard used by businesses to place operational key performance indicators or metrics on the desktop.
  2. Klipfolio Branded Desktop Application: a branded desktop application used by online businesses to encourage and facilitate customer interaction.
  3. Klipfolio Personal Dashboard: a freeware sidebar that can be used to easily display relevant information to the user.

[edit] Introduction

Klipfolio Dashboard was developed by Serence in 2001 to provide at-a-glance access to information that users have identified as being important to them. In 2008, Serence rebranded the company under the name Klipfolio, Inc. to take advantage of the brand recognition of Klipfolio Dashboard in the marketplace. The move reflected an increased emphasis by the firm on the enterprise or business dashboard market. Klipfolio Dashboard is now released in version 5.3.

In November 2009, B-eye Network interviewed [1] Klipfolio CEO Allan Wille regarding the Klipfolio Dashboard's position in the market place and the importance of real-time operational key performance indicators (KPIs). At the end of the same month, The Dashboard Spy reviewed [2] Klipfolio Publisher for real-time alerting and messaging on enterprise-dashboard.com

Dashboard Insight and The Dashboard Spy both published articles by Wille in 2008 on helping information workers focus on their priorities [3] and on making dashboard KPIs unavoidable for users [4] respectively.

In June 2007 Klipfolio Personal Dashboard took top honours from Webuser in a product review [5] that included Google Desktop, Yahoo! Widgets, and Windows Sidebar. The CNET site Download.com also lists KlipFolio as its most downloaded RSS reader[6].

[edit] Features

Klipfolio Dashboard features the following functionality (not a complete list):

Klipfolio Dashboard appears as an enterprise widget which can take the form of a top bar, bottom bar, sidebar, or a floating widget. The application installs with a variety of common Klips though many more are available for download. Klips are built and shared by Klipfolio and individual contributors.

All Klips can be moved, resized, and reordered by the user. Alternatively, enterprise IT departments can "lock down" part or all of the Klips or the look and feel of Klipfolio Dashboard to guarantee that users are presented with the KPIs prioritized by the business.

Klips can present and sort data in columns, bar charts, interactive pie charts, and spark lines. Mousing over any data point triggers additional background information to appear in a fly out and clicking can take a user directly to the underlying enterprise data system with no additional log in required.

Klipfolio Publisher

One of the latest additions to the Klipfolio Dashboard feature set is Klipfolio Publisher. This is a secure, hosted, and real-time messaging and alerting system that lets Klipfolio Dashboard users notify colleagues and coworkers without IT intervention. Users can choose both the timing and severity of their published messages. For example, an internal communications user could schedule a notification and link to an important new press release or announcement to arrive at the same time as the news is issued to the market. Depending on how important the announcement is, the alert may appear as passive news on the Klipfolio Dashboard or as a highly visible alert on the desktop that requires user acknowledgment.

[edit] Klips

Klips are interactive mini-applications that can be placed anywhere on the user's desktop to show new email, weather, photos and other options. Other Klips include a clock, calendar, scratch pad, to do list and more.

Klipfolio offers an SDK for people who wish to write Klips for Klipfolio Dashboard. These Klips can increase the functionality of the program. An official Klipblog and developer section has been created to support Klip developers

[edit] Technical

Klipfolio Dashboard includes a JavaScript based semantic markup language which creates relationships among disparate bits of data, helps to present these data bits in a consistent manner, and allows a web developer to create and modify Klips to his or her taste. Employing a semantic markup language also makes Klipfolio Dashboard portable: appropriate context for the data it presents can be maintained on the desktop, on a mobile device, or even via an automated voice system.

The application is built using proprietary internal systems including an XML parser and HTTP stack along with tailor made image scaling and PNG decoding. These developments were all designed to fit within a core code package that is still less than 500 KB.

Klipfolio Dashboard also includes CSS-based matching architecture to aid in the semantic markup of structured data based on HTML and XML.
