Knighton, Leicester
Knighton is an area of Leicester, situated roughly between Clarendon Park to the north, Stoneygate to the east, Oadby and Wigston to the south and the Saffron Lane estate to the west. It is a residential area, greatly expanded in the 1930s and 1940s with red-brick semi-detached houses.
Originally a separate village a couple of miles from Leicester city centre it became joined to it by the area known as Clarendon Park during the Victorian period due to the demand for housing for those newly employed in industry. It still, though, maintains many of the village's original features, such as Oram Cottage,[1] centred around the Church of St. Mary Magdalene (St. Mary Magdalen)[2] and therefore it has become a conservation zone.[3]
The village as a suburb expanded with housing estates of the mid-20th century of West Knighton and South Knighton appearing with a typical mix of housing for the post-war era.
It includes Knighton Park, which is a green flag holder and has a range of amenities including two play areas, tennis courts, pitch & put (seasonal opening), sensory garden, heath garden. The Wash Brook runs through the park.
