Sir Konstantin Sergeevich "Kostya" Novoselov,[6] FRS, HonFRSC, HonFInstP (Russian: Константи́н Серге́евич Новосёлов; IPA: [kənstɐnˈtʲin sʲɪrˈgʲejɪvʲɪt͡ɕ nəvɐˈsʲɵləf]; born 23 August 1974) is a Russian-British physicist, known for his works on graphene together with Andre Geim, which earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010.[7],[8][9] Novoselov is currently Langworthy professor of physics in the mesoscopic physics research group at the University of Manchester and a Royal Society University Research Professor[10] (he was previously a Royal Society University Reseach Fellow).[11],[12] Novoselov is also a recipient of a starting grant[13] from the European Research Council.[14],[15],[16],[17]

Education[edit]

Konstantin Novoselov was born in Nizhny Tagil, Soviet Union, in 1974.[18] He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology with a MSc degree in 1997,[1] and was awarded a PhD degree from the Radboud University of Nijmegen in 2004[3] for work supervised by Andre Geim.

Together with Geim, Novoselov has published more than 190 peer-reviewed research papers on several topics including mesoscopic superconductivity (Hall magnetometry),[19] subatomic movements of magnetic domain walls,[20] the discovery of gecko tape[21] and graphene.[22][23],[24]

Kostya Novoselov participated in the Graphene Flagship project[25] – a €1 billion initiative of the European Commission – and was featured in the official promotion movie of the project.[26]

Novoselov is a director[citation needed] of National Graphene Institute.[27]

Awards and honours[edit]

  • 2007 Nicholas Kurti European Science Prize "aimed to promote and recognise the novel work of young scientists working in the fields of Low Temperatures and/or High Magnetic Fields."[28]
  • 2008 Technology Review-35 Young Innovator [29]
  • 2008 University of Manchester Researcher of the Year.
  • 2008 Europhysics Prize, "for discovering and isolating a single free-standing atomic layer of carbon (graphene) and elucidating its remarkable electronic properties."[30],[31]

Personal life[edit]

Novoselov holds both Russian and British citizenship.[46] He is married and has two daughters.[1]
