K-Rockathon is a rock concert that is held annually in Central New York. These concerts have been held at venues in Vernon, Syracuse, Oswego, Utica, and Weedsport, NY. K-Rockathon exploits the biggest bands of the time as well as showing off what the local bands have to offer. They have showcased many genres from alternative rock, to rap rock, to straight metal.
[edit] History
Modern rock radio station, K-Rock 100.9 FM - 106.5 FM in Syracuse and K-Rock 94.9 FM in Utica, had been on the air for just a few years and decided that they needed to throw a party for all of their listeners. A party where fans of Central New York could rock out to some of their favorite bands. Their own show, developed around the tastes of the people where they weren't just a stop on a mega tour. A place where fans could go and interact with the bands via K-Rock and hang with them on their own grounds. The K-Rockathon has since grown to be one of the most anticipated events each year. Not just a show, but a huge rock festival with food, drinks, shops, activities, and music from the bands at the top of the music charts.
Not only is there the major K-Rockathon event, but since 2007, a new series of mini shows has emerged. Every year before K-Rockathon, there will be a K-Rock Dysfunctional Family BBQ event. They are quite a bit smaller, but still have great music and a lot of food. Starting in 2010, a Spring Slam will be held before K-Rock's annual Dysfunctional Family BBQ.
In its first several years, K-Rockathon tickets sold for $10.00 or $12.00 dollars. Ticket prices were marketed as "10 Bands for 10 Bucks" or "12 Bands for 12 Bucks" depending on the number of artists scheduled to perform at the concert in a given year. This marketing has been abandoned in recent years as the number of scheduled bands has decreased and ticket prices have increased to roughly $40.00.
