Kumud is the name given to a red water-lily flower in Sanskrit. It is feminine; and its male rendering may be "Kumudeshwar" or the Lord of Kumud, or "Kumudabharan" or covering of the Kumud, and so on. Kumud flower opens at sunset and closes at sunrise. The lotus flowering in the neighbourhood opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. The contrast is used in poetic similes in Sanskrit literature and in the Indian languages that evolve from Sanskrit. Usually a blue water-lily flowers near Kumud in the same natural environment. The blue water-lily is called Nalini. In poetry, Kumud and Nalini are presented as the difference in the quality of striking beauties of girls: like Blonde and Brunette of the western civilisation.
