Kurgan (Russian: Курга́н) is the city and the administrative center of Kurgan Oblast, Russia. Population: 333,640 (2010 Census preliminary results);[1] 345,515 (2002 Census);[2] 355,517 (1989 Census).[5].

Kurgan is on the Trans-Siberian railway line, between Yekaterinburg and Omsk. It is served by two train stations, Kurgan Airport and was home to Kurgan West air base during the Cold War. It is also a home to Ilizarov’s Scientific Center of Reparative Traumatology and Orthopedics, KAvZ autobus plant, and the machine building company Kurganmashzavod which produces the widely known BMP-1, BMP-2 and BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles.

Founded in 1662 as Tsaryovo Gorodishche (Царёво Городи́ще), it acquired its present name in 1782, which it became the chief town of an uyezd. Its coat of arms dates from 1785, and it became the administrative center of Kurgan Oblast in 1943.
