The Kyle & Jackie O Show is a top-rated, often controversial, Australian breakfast radio show hosted by Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O on 2Day FM.
[edit] Background
The show has attracted criticism from other Australia media and music personalities, including David Marr, Jason Whalley from the band Frenzal Rhomb and comedian Wil Anderson[citation needed]. The criticism generally focuses on the poor taste of practical jokes the hosts play on members of the public and the extremities of "dares" which they force their on-air news anchor into doing. This has led to Kyle & Jackie O being referred commonly to as Vile and Jackie Ho or Vile and Tacky Ho by Wil Anderson.

In July, 2006, it emerged that some of the callers to their show were actually fictitious. The duo claimed to be unaware of this.[1]
On July 29, 2009, a segment aired in which a 14-year-old girl was strapped to a lie detector while her mother, Sandilands, and Jackie O all asked probing questions about her past experiences with sex and drugs. The segment ended soon after the child admitted to being raped at the age of 12.[2] Sandliands garnered particular criticism for asking "Right ... is that the only experience you've had?".[3]
The segment was widely criticised by health professionals, media commentators, the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the public, and reported internationally.[4][5] A group of 15 high-profile psychologists, academics, and child advocates wrote to The Age suggesting the show had been the venue for child abuse and a gross violation of human rights.[6] [7]
As a result of the stunt and the ensuing backlash, advertisers American Express, Optus, Qantas and Channel 10 pulled their advertising from the 2Day FM morning show.[8]
Austereo suspended the show indefinitely on 2 August 2009.[9] [10]
On 13 August 2009, Austereo chairman Peter Harvie and chief executive Michael Anderson said Jackie O and Sandilands will be back on air on 18 August 2009. [11][12] The station will implement new structures and systems in relation to the use of time delay, pre-recording and procedures dealing with interviews, to avoid a repetition of the occurrence on 29 July 2009.[13] The show resumed broadcasting on 17 August 2009.
It was reported on 17 August 2009 that 2DayFM and Sandilands broke a promise to provide a disabled child's family with $150,000 in donations that had been part of an on-air appeal.[14]
On 9 September 2009, Sandilands was suspended after on-air comments suggesting Australian TV host and comedian Magda Szubanski would lose more weight in a concentration camp. “You put her in a concentration camp and you watch the weight fall off … like she could be skinny”.[15] Sandilands and his fellow host Jackie "O" Henderson were debating who should be the next face of weight-loss company Jenny Craig. Szubanski had recently lost 25kg using the Jenny Craig program during a well-documented public weight battle.
In a statement Szubanski, whose father was a Polish resistance fighter during World War II, told ninemsn news “I couldn’t give two hoots about what Kyle says about me, but to trivialise what happened to people in concentration camps is abhorrent.” [16] Jewish groups have also criticised Sandilands and once again called for his sacking.[17]
Whilst Sandilands is on suspension, Andrew G, Danni Minogue and Brian McFadden have taken up hosting duties with Jackie O, under the name Breakfast With The Stars.
[edit] Audience and ratings
For the radio ratings period of June-August 2009, Kyle & Jackie O finished 1st in Sydney and 2Day FM was the number one FM station in Sydney. During this ratings period the on-air lie detector stunt was aired.[18]
During the radio ratings period of 28 June-5 September 2009, Kyle & Jackie O finished 1st in the FM Breakfast slot [19] but the show went from a 12 per cent share of Sydney breakfast listeners to just 9.8 per cent, a drop of approximately 18 per cent in total listening audience.[20]
