Passive matrix addressing takes advantage of hysteresis to display images on liquid crystal displays. Without this effect, passive matrix LCD panels would not be able to display anything. Similarly; Active-matrix LCDs whose pixels use dedicated transistors are sometimes "dead pixels".[vague]
