Lakai Footwear Limited is a footwear company based in Torrance, California that creates shoes designed for and inspired by skateboarding. Lakai was founded by professional skateboarders and Girl Skateboards co-founders Mike Carroll and Rick Howard in 1999. They felt they could make a contribution to the skate-footwear world by running their own company rather than riding for someone else's. The company was formed after both riders left DC Shoes.[1]

After the release of Lakai's tour video 'Beware of the Flare' in June 2002[2], their first full-length team video 'Fully Flared' premiered on November 16, 2007. It was released on DVD on December 7, 2007. It went on to receive the Years Best Video Award from The Skateboard Mag and the best video award at the 10th Transworld Skateboarding Awards.[citation needed]

Lakai Limited Footwear is part of the Crailtap Distribution along with companies Girl Skateboards, Fourstar Clothing, Royal Trucks, and Chocolate Skateboards.

[edit] Lakai Footwear and Apparel

Lakai has been built around grass roots tradition since day one. In 1993, Mike Carroll and Rick Howard thought they might have a better formula for a skateboard company--- one that made products the team would be proud of and kept an atmosphere that was supportive and motivating. While it was a risk, they felt like they owed it to skateboarding and skateboarders to take that risk. In 1999, facing a similar situation in respect to footwear, Mike and Rick introduced Lakai Limited Footwear with the same dedication and pride they have always invested into their skateboarding and the Girl/Chocolate brands. Simply stated, they are “The Shoes We Skate”. In 2007, Lakai released their first feature film, "Fully Flared".
