Land Force Atlantic Area is responsible for Canadian Army operations in the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. LFAA is headquartered at Canadian Forces Base Halifax on the Atlantic coast. The command was formed in 1992.

On September 5, 2008, the Defence Minister, Peter MacKay, announced that The Halifax Rifles will be reorganized as an active militia unit after 43 years as a nil-strength unit on the Supplementary Order of Battle as an Armoured Unit.
