In July 2007, the district became part of the Maakhir autonomous region of Somalia. It has archaeological sites as well as ancient historic buildings. Most of the archaeological sites are still yet to be fully explored.

[edit] History of Laasqoray

Laasqoray overview

Laasqoray is about 500 years old and Laasqoray used to be the capital city of the Sultanate of Mohamoud Ali Shire(Warsangeli Sultanates) which also have known as the Maakhir Coast Sultanate

One among many historical landmark in the city is called Sha’a and it was the palace of many Sultans, however due to lack of interest in its preservation from the past Somali government, the castle aged and became too dangerous to be used. Many old houses in the city have experienced the same problems as the castle.

[edit] Economy

Laasqoray is a city that is booming and in a rapid growth as new small factories are being opened and formed in Laasqoray. Similar to any other city or district in Sanaag, Laasqoray became neglected by many central governments in Somalia with population going down, however this is reversing as many people are working in factories that have been opened in the city. Another reason for the growth of the population is that when the Somali civil war broke out Somalis from the Warsangeli clan who had been victimized in other parts of Somalia started migrating back to their "ancestral" homeland and Laasqoray is considered by many Warsangelis as the main "ancestral" place.

In addition, the city is famous for its fish factory, the only factory of its kind in Somalia. There are some other factories there as well. This city is also surrounded by beautiful mountains known locally as Cal Madow, which has internationally valuable un-exploited mineral deposits and unique natural habitats, which are part of Somalias heritage

[edit] Entertainment

Laasqoray has green Mountains on the East side knows as the Cal Madow. Cal Madow is considered a world-class exploration area with a petroleum system identical to and formerly contiguous with those within the Republic of Yemen

The sea with white beaches and crystal clear sea water and nice reef in the sea is plenty. In the city there are many activities you can do like visiting Coffee shops where Khat is consumed and Internet cafés. There are many hotels and guest houses in Laasqoray.

[edit] Visit Laasqoray

The best period to visit this city is between September and May, during the rain season since the heat in the summertime is generally unbearable for outsiders. In the outskirts of the city one can find Rock Mountains, grassland with wildlife and unique trees, creating a panoramic view.

[edit] Port development in Laasqoray

The Old Port in Laasqoray, Somalia

Horn Relief is re-developing the port in Laasqoray, which aims to create immediate employment and longer-term livelihood by redeveloping the former Laasqoray Port, which some people says is 400 years old. The intention is that import and export opportunities can be restored to the North coastal region for the rebuilding of communities and livelihoods.

This project is being undertaken with strong and ongoing support from all stakeholders and will involve partnerships with government and social/cultural authorities jointly.

This infrastructure and governance Project involves collaboration between the communities in and around Laasqoray and the private sector, including traders in the Northern hinterland to simulate new trade and infrastructural investments in the Laasqorey area.
