Les Anciens d'AEGEE is the alumni association of the interdisciplinary European students' association AEGEE. It was founded in May 1990 in Paris by Johannes Heister during the EGEE VI meeting of AEGEE-Europe. Les Anciens d'AEGEE is a secular, non-profit organisation not linked to any political party. Its purpose is to strengthen the links between AEGEE-alumni and the currently active generation of AEGEE members. Les Anciens d'AEGEE organises several events per year, informs about current developments in AEGEE and discusses European and professional matters. Les Anciens in itself is not a continuation of AEGEE - while AEGEE is focussing on organising local events, conferences, summer courses and international projects related to matters of European integration, Les Anciens d'AEGEE does not have a thematic approach.

[edit] Membership

It is not possible to apply for membership. Former active AEGEE members can be invited to join the alumni association after having been suggested for membership to the Secretary General of Les Anciens d'AEGEE by two of its members. In order to qualify for membership, a person has to have been involved either in the European level of the association, for example by having been member of the European board or by having organised international projects, or a person has had to be in the board of a local AEGEE branch. While the number of AEGEE members is 13.000, the number of Les Anciens d'AEGEE members was 620 in October 2011. Every year about 50 new alumni join Les Anciens d'AEGEE.

[edit] Support for AEGEE

Many members of Les Anciens d'AEGEE work successful as entrepreneurs in their self-founded companies, are involved in national politics or are working for institutions such as the UN and the OSCE or the European Commission. Therefore, Les Anciens d'AEGEE acts as a pool of experience for each current generation of active AEGEE members. If advice is needed, usually there are Les Anciens d'AEGEE members at hand who have dealt with a similar problem before or can help due to their professional background. The members of Les Anciens d'AEGEE are supporting AEGEE with contacts in the business sector or in international institutions. Les Anciens d'AEGEE also supports AEGEE-Europe projects and board members of AEGEE-Europe financially with the help of its Les Anciens Continuity Fund.

[edit] Internal Structure

Les Anciens d'AEGEE has a very flat hierarchy. The General Assembly is the legislative of the association. During the General Assembly the board presents its moral report and financial report as well as strategic plans. In between the annual assemblies, the executive board is taking care of all administrative matters. The board of Les Anciens consists of the Coordinator, the Secretary General, the Treasurer and two additional board members. They are elected for two years. The current board members, elected in June 2011, are Gunnar Erth (Coordinator), Carolien Nijenhuis (Secretary General), Tim Sattler (Treasurer), Rissana Shytu (Activities Coordinator) and Eleonora Campione (Communication Coordinator).

The last meeting took place in Cyprus in June 2011, the next one will be in Edinburgh in June 2011. Next to the General Assembly between five and ten other events are held every year.
