Lewes is a constituency located in East Sussex and centred on the town of Lewes. It is represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was a safe Conservative seat until 1997, but the Liberal Democrats have gained a strong foothold.
[edit] Boundaries
The constituency is centred on the town of Lewes, for which it is named. However, the constituency also covers most of the Lewes district and parts of the Wealden district.
[edit] History
The constituency of Lewes has existed since Commoners were first summoned to Parliament in 1295. It is notable for the fact that between 1874 and 1997 it elected only Conservative Members of Parliament (MPs). This run was brought to an end by the election of current MP Norman Baker, a Liberal Democrat.
