Icelandic license plates have three letters and two digits. Plates issued before June 2007 have two letters and three digits. The combination of letters has no connection to a geographic location. The plate has a sticker that shows what year the vehicle has to be taken to safety inspection, the last digit on the plate indicates the month of expiration (e.g. 1 for January, 2 for February). On the left side on all regular license plates issued after April 2004 is the Icelandic national emblem. Older plates issued before April 2004 are required to have a national emblem sticker.
